What temps does a 2010 i7/i5 iMac get?

Hi,

I'm wondering if anyone could post what your regular temps for your 2010 i7 iMac (or i5) are as well as what your temps are under load in Mac OS X; interested in all of the temperatures listed in iStat Nano but primarily CPU, GPU, HD and OD (optical drive).

I am also interested to know that. Today or tomorrow, I am planning to order a new iMac, but still need to make this important decision: i5 or i7.

The stories I heard indicate that the i7 processor (2.93Ghz) gets hotter and consumes more power even if the Hyper Threading technology is not used, which, of course, will result in fans being louder. However, when idling both the i7 and the i5 are almost the same regarding their power consumption and thus the loudness of the fans.

It means that if you will be working behind your iMac, the temps of the i7 version will be slightly higher and the fans will be more noticeable than it is the case with the i5.

I've found in my case (09 27" i7 iMac) that it is really only the GPU, hard drive, and optical drive that are too hot, stock fans are basically silent, I up them to drop the temps a little bit.

Yeah, my 09 model's hard drive sits at 60c, optical drive/mem controller ~58c, GPU/GPU Diode ~65, CPU ~45c, ambient ~25c. After playing Portal in OS X for a while, the temps are

I'm pretty sure the GPUs in the new iMacs (at least the high end) are cooler than their 09 model equivalents, HD 60, CPU ~47, GPU ~73, etc.

Cpu hovers idle around 40-45c; hdd hovers idle around 35-40c; gpu hovers idle around 50c.

When taxed, the cpu can get up to 70c, before fans start kicking in and then cpu goes down to around 65-60c. Gpu will get up to 80 before fans start kicking in, and then will hover in the 70s. Hdd sometimes gets around 55, but usually hovers at 50c while everything else is taxed.

In windows it's different, gpu gets up to 88c, but still well under its threshold.

HDD temp would be the main thing to worry about under windows.
