Why on earth would they replace their 2600Pro with a worse 9400m? (iMacs)

Can anyone think of a SINGLE reason why they would put in a WORSE video card? I just don't understand.....

I agree. Not only that, Europeans got totally screwed this time around.

Not only did they remove the HD2600 from the perfectly fine iMac in the middle, replacing it with a graphics card that is nowhere near as good. But they also bumped up the price of ALL models by about 350 bucks over here. The prices are the same as before over at Apple.com, but over at Apple.se the low-end model now costs 13 000 SEK instead of 9995 sek. And the model that used to have the HD2600, was capable of playing Left4Dead among other things, and used to cost about 12 500 sek, now costs almost 16 000 and comes with the 9400M. BS!

If you want a dedicated graphics card in the iMac you have to go for the top models which start at 20 freaking thousand Swedish kronor. And yes, that is over 2100 bucks.

How is that fair?! I was considering an iMac with the HD2600 a few days ago, but there's no way I can afford one now, especially not if I actually want good gaming performance. It's a good thing I decided to get a Macbook instead, this is just crazy.

Oh, and let's not forget the mini which got a bump in specs, but also a bump in price. It now costs 200 bucks more than before, but guess what... Over in the US you still pay as much for the new mini as the old one. Again, unfair.

Would be interesting to see if Apple comes to the point where they end up dropping their prices, as was the case with the iPhone.

I would say they need to, at minimum drop at least £100 on the Mac Mini - can I see it happening? Hell no.

Really now?

The prices in Europe have always, ALWAYS been higher on pretty much everything. We pay much higher taxes too. And the prices in the Apple Store have been the same as the prices over there for a long time, until now.

/Nevermind.

Here is how I see it.

For the low end they replaced the ATI Radeon HD 2400 XT with NVIDIA GeForce 9400M. That is an upgrade!

For the midrange, they replace the Radeon HD 2600 PRO with GT 120 or 130. This is again an improvement.

Finally for the high end, they swapped the 8800GS with a Radeon 4850! That is a very nice upgrade.

I see no problem here.

Nope I dont see it. I do not agree with you.

In the top model its a an Nvidia 130 not a 4850.. unless you stump up even more money. (on top of the overpriced hike that has already been added on).. Oh and the 130 is about the same performance as the old 8800 GS model. Hmmmm. pathetic update for your extra £449 !

The base model now features a shared memory 9400 chipset which is quite frankly... poor.. compared to the old model's discrete graphics card.

The 9400M may be quicker than an integrated X3100 on the macbook's but it really doesnt have any place in a desktop machine.

So no... dont see your point at all. The new iMacs suck donkey balls. More expensive for equivalent if not lesser hardware... Apple screwed up, and it will cost them dear.

Actually it won't. Here you just have a large portion of the whiners and bitchers. In the real world things aren't the same.

In the store today they sold out of their initial shipment of new Imacs before 1pm.

1499 for the low end new Imac that comes with a huge harddrive and 4 GB ram , a nice 24" screen and OS X is a nice deal. The 9400m runs WoW fine and thats the main game thats going to be ran on the thing.

Like it or not , most people are going to look at it as a decent deal, and plenty for their needs.

Can the 2600 Pro handle OpenCL? If not, there's your answer (at least in part).

Ya, but the 9400m is worse at gaming, CAD, basically stuff I do the most....I was thinking of buying an iMac just because it would be nice to have a permanent Mac that stays put. Now I probably wont....well a new one anyways...

Wow.. i sure am glad i bought the refurb 2600 24in imac late last year.. i would have bummed hard if I was to buy a 9400 imac for a higher price..

Yeah, I bet all the people on these forums that bought an Imac before the "refresh" must be laughing there heads off...

I must say that this must have been the biggest anti-climax ever for anyone who was desperately waiting on the new models coming out.

Gaz

We've seen this before when they downgraded the panel from IPS in the 20" white iMac to TN in the 20" Alu iMac, so it shouldn't be too surprising.

We got lots of pissed-off 20" iMac customers for a while (especially those who "upgraded" from white to Alu).

This, too, will die down as most customers won't notice a difference.

I was tempted by the mini, and was waiting for the refresh. Spec wise on paper i would have been happy with the higher model setup, 2Gb, 360Gb HDD and the 9400 graphics ...

but the price ? £649 :eek::eek::eek::eek:

absolutely no chance. Yeah, I accept that the dollar may be strong, but that price for a 2Ghz Core2Duo machine with only 2Gb ram ??? There is just no way that the mini can be considered a switch-over machine from the PC these days. You can get a complete laptop with an equivalent spec ( and better in some areas ) for that price. And £649 will buy you a base spec i7 desktop from dell.

Its a no brainer. I'd love to try the Apple side of things, but the reality is they are pricing themselves out the market here in the UK.

My sentiments exactly! I'm just hoping that it was a massive type-o and I'll log onto the apple site tomorrow and see the prices normalized. Heh!

Been waiting since before christmas for an update of the iMac. Definately not buying now. Yes ddr3 is a nice, expected change and even if 9400 is kind of meh it still could have been worth it IF they hadn't bumped up the prices here in Sweden... I'm never, EVER going to pay that kind of money for such a poor update.

Now they use the same GPU in almost the whole portable and consumer line, they're getting them for peanuts and can pass the savings (greed) onto their customers
