I often reduce size of my JPGs by using Preview's JPG export quality slider.

The bug first introduced in beta 1 is as follows:

- I open my JPG, weighing 100 MB
- I select Export
- I drag the Quality slider down to about 5%
- I export

The newly exported JPG should be around 5 MB. But it's not; it's still the same file weighing 100 MB, nothing changed.

I was hoping this would be fixed in subsequent betas, but no. Then I was hoping it would be fixed in GM, but no. Then I was hoping it would be fixed in 11.0.1 RC2, but no. Then I was hoping it would be fixed in public version 11.0.1, but no.

OMG, what is happening???

Is it just me? Is it working for anybody else?

Same here - very annoying

Edit 15 nov -

I just tried it again and it actually does work - but the slider does not indicate it before you do export the file - after I tried exporting - adjusting the slider to different positions it does acutally reduce the file size and converts formats - it just does not indicate it in the export menu / screen

Hi everyone,

I have a similar issue: I can't choose the resolution of an image exported from a pdf with preview app. In particular, I open a pdf with preview app, I click one file > export, I select JPEG I change the default resolution option (72 ppi) with an other value but the images exported are 72 ppi for any value that I set as resolution.

Is there someone who knows how to make it work?
Thanks

Me too. I had never experienced this before but yesterday for about a half hour, preview wouldn’t reduce the file size either with export or with adjust size options. Whatever magic keystrokes broke the thrall, I don’t know. But it worked agains suddenly.

Oh my, Preview just gets worse and worse. It's infuriating. Glad I'm not the only one. I'm sure this is related to the diabolical saving ain't saving garbage introduced into the OS over the last 5 years. Modifying files used to be bread and butter for applications like these. Now it's a bewildering chase-the-file adventure.

I work around this by emailing myself a reduced sized image

I like the ingenuity of the workaround! I found one, slightly less convoluted, that I had to register to share:

  1. Export to a lossless format (eg. HEIC with quality on max).
  2. Open the exported file.
  3. Export back to JPEG with the custom quality setting.

I had this happen today too, for the first time. It worked for my purpose today to rescale the image, but if I needed to keep the same dimensions, I'd've been stuck too.

How strange, I just had that issue yesterday as well! Still running Big Sur 11.6, but who knows for how long that bug has been and will be there... Worked perfectly in older versions of macOS for me.
