What the heck is the SMC firmware update? When I installed it the fans turn on really hard for a little bit and then turned off. I think my fans are actually spinning right now when they aren't under load! Yeah at full processor load before my desk almost caught on fire and now it is barely warm. Hooray!!

The 15-inch MacBook Pro uses an advanced system management controller (SMC) to manage thermal and power conditions, while keeping the acoustic noise to a minimum. The SMC is fully independent of the operating system.

Source. (Other Macs also contain one -- this is not too imply the MBP is the only one).

Did the update come up in Software Update, or else where do you get it?

Temperature under battery is down from 55 Celsius to 50 Celsius. Measured by Coreduo Temp app. Doesn't fix the whine though.

Edit: now down to 48 Celsius

MBP is noticeably cooler. Nice update!!

My iMac is quieter, and my system is more responsive.. espically in windows.

I think this just had something to do with the Changing of Speed of the CPU/GPU under Load/Idle Conditions... Its more efficent.

So that = Faster when we need it, Slower when we dont. Cooler all the time in general... and quieter. <3

I never really checked the temp (by touch) of my MBP until i read this thread after the SMC update and it really is cooler. however, i do think that my MBP has a louder whine!! hella weak.

Does this update make the fans run less. My MBPs fans seem to be running on 90% of the time. Very annoying. I think Apple made a big mistake moving the vent from the side to behind the hinge. My PBs fans hardly ever went on, and then it was just for a minute or two.

Eh?

I haven't noticed too much really on my end, except when I started using Illustrator CS2 the temp didn't go all the way up to 86 this time just 78 which you know I"ll take it. that for me is a 8 degree difference. right now it's sitting at 63.

Either than that no whine, no fans. i'll try a pram and pmu reset just to try and get all on same leg. i'll let you know.
