What to buy machine wise?

Right -

iMac G5 - staple machine for me - desktop of choice.

Now what I need is to figure out my other purchases in the distant future when my Windoze desktop and iBook have died

I need a portable laptop, and a gaming machine (not necessarily the same machine mind)

Now my thought is a 17" Windows entertainment laptop for my gaming machine, high end piece of kit at whatever is high at the time (remember this could be 12 months or more - likely mid-late 2007) and keep a bit of portability at the same time.

In addition I would probably but a 12" Macbook Pro (prefer the aluminium over the iBook's plastic) for my portable machine.


Anyone any thoughts on this? Obviously it isn't a real situation as I'm not looking to in the near future, just thought it would make fun speculation as to what other people came up with

Well, I think a 13" widescreen MacBook Pro seems more likely considering how Apple have abandoned their current 12" PowerBook over the past year or so.

As a general summary.

This is universally a horrible time to be spending any serious money on any
computer system. Regardless of platform.

Any product you can buy right now will be totally leap-frogged within 24
months by faster 64 bit server quality dual cores, Quad Cores and beyond.

Of course most people can't or won't wait that long, so it's a matter of taking
a serious look at your real NEEDS vs WANTS during the transition.

This won't affect general use education and office machines as much as it
affects the pros who really need performance to generate income.

I would buy just enough to hold me through 2008

Seems like this could "universally" be said about all technology at all times. I understand it may be a little worse right now for Mac's because of the intel switch, but come on, this is always the issue with computers. Even if the Intel revision A machines have issues, I'm sure they are still a solid computer that will stand the test of time for quite a while.

So you have a G5 iMac, and you want to get 2 laptops.....one WinPC laptop for gaming? Why not just get one? This assumes that Macs will be better at gaming in the future.

It's more annoying than anything. I came in to help people make buying decisions, and now we have to guess what you should hypothetically purchase before the rest of the MBP line is released, and before the iBook replacement line is released?

How is this interesting? We see "buying advice" questions all the time.


And just to add to the 13" laptop hoopla, the 13" is still considered small, and would offer Apple some more space to play around with internally. It's also more usable in widescreen format. The Dell 12" widescreen is proof that 12" is too small for a widescreen, but 13.3" is good. Just look at a 13.3" Vaio. It's still small.
