So I don't feel like waiting for the new mac pros that could be coming at the end of this year or later...I was wondering what you recommend is the cheapest new mac pro config that is actually worth it, worth it meaning it is not grossly overpriced to a competitor. For example I keep hearing the 2.8 Quad is really not worth it since Dell's is a lot cheaper, but the 2 2.4 Quad is less overpriced compared to Dell's for example.

price-wise, it's only the dual processor versions that are competitive...but if you intend to run OS X, you don't have much of a choice. if you intend to run Windows or Linux, a Dell or HP is probably still a better option because they offer better support.

I really like OSX (using macbook for now)...so I definitely am getting another mac, and I need the processing power finally that a desktop provides. I also don't have that many funds to buy a very expensive rig right now, but I would rather pay 1000 more for a config that I am not getting "ripped off".

Any general comments going with the baseline 2*2.4 Quad config right now, if my needs are basically for running a semi-pro music rig with Logic and wanting to get the cheapest worthwhile mac pro?

If you want to belong to the "Apple Club" you will pay a hefty price, get used to it.

Rumor has it they are holding back the Mac Pros (also Mac Minis and MacBook Airs) to launch with Lion. So the refreshes won't be at the end of this year. Maybe a month max but probably a lot sooner.

What about a Hackintosh instead, I mean since it is just the box that'll be having the apple logo on it and not the whole thing like an iMac or Macbook (where you're also paying for more battery life and other stuff) I don't see the point of paying the premium for and Apple branded Mac Pro when you can build it yourself and install OSX on it :)

From what I've heard hackintosh always seems to have some problem with audio interface drivers which I will definitely be using. Also I think there can be problems with software from time to time?

the 2.8 quad turns into a 3.2 hex for about 400 to 500 diy. the quad can be had for 2200 if you look around and you can make it a 3.2 hex for 500 so you get a 3.2 hex for 2700. with careful shopping less money then that.

the 09 does not have wireless airport extreme once you buy that part it is not cheaper.

cost 2039 without built in airport extreme a 640gb hdd a nvidia gt 120

cost 2119 with built in airport extreme a 1tb hdd better graphics card a radeon 5770 .

also using the 2009 with the efi hack is a hack most likely not legal . ( I am not a lawyer not sure )

using the 2010 with the 3.2 hex cpu is most likely legal. ( I am not a lawyer not sure).

However if I were a juror in a civil case in the usa. I would vote that the 2009 upgrade is not legal since it involves software/firmware.

I would vote the 2010 us legal since it is a piece of hardware. Much the same as an ssd upgrade like an intel series 320 ssd.
