Here is a link to the InsanelyMac forums which describes the process of patching your MBR to enable AHCI mode (needed for Windows to see the ODD SATA ports). Although it is MUCH easier with Vista compared to XP (just requires a single registry key change) there is always a risk when mucking around with the boot sector. I just did the fix on my Vista install a week or two ago and it works beautifully.

The (very) general method is:
  1. Change the required registry keys/install drivers
  2. Shutdown Windows
  3. Boot into Mac OS X
  4. Run the ahci.sh script and patch your Windows partition

It's right in the first post of the link I posted.

cool, many thanks!!

so you need to do everything in windows itself?

I am a bit confused by this:

For Windows XP
You need to Force the installation of the AHCI mode driver over the Legacy driver
--Here is how--
- Open device manager WHERE AT?
- Under IDE / ATA section open properties for the "Intel 631xESB/6321ESB Ultra ATA Storage Controller - 2680"
- Update the driver for 2680 with one labeled 2681 (ESB2 SATA AHCI Controller)
- You will need to uncheck the box that limits you to only known supported drivers for your hardware
- Once installed it will require a restart
- Attempting to restart into XP without doing the next steps will leave you with a BSOD and instant reboot-

SO YOU NEED TO PUT IN THE OSX CD?

Extremely important note: Window XP is VERY touchy. If the drivers are not installed properly or you do not have the correct driver installed Windows will not boot; it will simply bluescreen at startup. If you are having trouble finding basic items such as the "Device Manager" I STRONGLY advise against performing this mod on Windows XP as you will be up ****'s creek without a paddle if something goes wrong. With that said, the "Device Manager" is in the System control panel.

I am not sure how reliable the Window 7 support in the MBR mod script is as I have yet to test it. It works fine for Vista x64 though.

If you are using XP you first need to boot into Windows. Once you are in you need to replace your existing IDE drivers with the Intel AHCI ones (downloaded from Intel's site, the link is in the InsanelyMac thread). Windows will yell at you that the drivers are not supported on your hardware but you should ignore this message. Once that is done, reboot into OS X and run the attached "ahci.sh" shell script (must be run via sudo). The script will spit out each of the drives that it finds with a Windows MBR, just select the one you want to mod. Once that is complete you should be able to reboot into the Windows install you just modified and have AHCI support.

OK, i see, i was just a bit confused, because i thought you could mod the odd sata ports from os x WITHOUT windows being installed?

i know where to get to the device manager in windows i thought there was one in OS x ?

was just confused is all!!

thanks!!
