Hi,
I'm thinking about getting a new iMac in a couple of days. I already have 3rd party RAM and just need to know what I should get the 20" or the 24"? this decision is really troubling me i am using a student discount online, and for everything i would want the 24" is $1,750. I use my computer for safari, ichat, mail, iphone, photobooth, iwork, some games, time machine, itunes, skype, quicktime, handbrake, and front row. not much more. what would you recommend?
thanks for your time

A 24 is a sweet machine but so is the 20". For me the 20" is a plus because it uses less power and 20" isnt what i would call small. 200 watts max vs 280 for the 24. Either way you cant go wrong in my view. Apple has a great all in one and if you are a student why bother with the 24"? Plus if you want to get really thrifty you can get a refurb 20" from Apple for $1299.00 Now that puts $500 in your pocket. You can now get a iphone, pod, games or go bowling......:D

what do u mean, if you are a student why bother?

Are you close to an Apple store? It would be better to go to an Apple store and have a look (and a play) on both machines. I found the 24" hurt my eyes but then they may have had the brightness turned up full. I will be buying a 24" when they get updated because I use a 22" display with my PC now and don't want to go smaller

I'm not sure, but I'm in no rush to buy one (it's just my year old PC is the same/better spec as the 2.4GHz iMac so I can't justify spending that king of money on one).

As for the RAM, you'd be better off looking at 3rd party companies like OWC and Crucial. They are far cheaper. You can get 4GB from Crucial for $107.99

I would have thought Apple would introduce the Penryn soon but they may wait until the Summer for that. Who knows

thanks for the idea, i just ordered another 1GB module from OWC because i dont think i need more than 2 GB

and this imac is supposed to be a companion to my macbook pro that is breaking little by little according to iStat Pro and apple. i wouldnt get another laptop bc the screeens are too small and apple cinema displays currently suck compared to the iMac's beautiful screens.

I don't know if you considered it, but under the Apple refurb section has a 17" Core 2 Duo iMac for $849. Has 2GHz Core 2 Duo, 1GB RAM, 160GB HD, X1600 graphics, Leopard + iLife '08. I've had one for a month and it's been a excellent machine in every way. I added another 2GB of RAM and the machine screams... however if you want more screen space go for the 20". Regardless of what iMac you choose, they are all great machines.

i've also heard about some screen problems on the 24" iMac. Is this true? if so what kind of problems are people experiencing

Yeah, I've heard about the screen issues, but I think they tend to be more with the 24". Things like one side of the screen being darker than the other, etc.

and how many products are affected by this?
i've had plenty of bad luck with apple and the "bad" product
