My iMac is sitting on my desk, for a couple of hours a day if its sunny its in direct sunshine. Do you think this is going to be a problem eventually? Heat cycles on the display and so on? Do i need to invest in better curtains?
I'd expect the biggest issue will be glare. Unless it's right in front of the window in a room without AC and zero air movement. Then it might heat up some.
If concerned, you can get some UV window tint. I use it on all my windows. Mainly to reduce heat in the summer. It also improves privacy as I use one which acts as a one way mirror. It spooks people a little as an added funny bonus. As I have it on my storm door. People hear my front door open but only see themselves in the mirror.
The downside of putting on the film. It's a huge pain in the rear to install. You have to get your windows unbelievably clean to prevent bubbles. Cutting perfectly to size is hard. As is working out the bubbles without scratching it to hell.
Note: The mirror effect is partially reversed at night. So, shades are still needed.
I also use a fine mesh screen on all my windows. Mainly to keep small insects out. It also reduces light and heat.
This is a good question. I would not be so concerned about heat (unless it is really intense), but UV can be surprisingly damaging to organic compounds when exposed for long periods. Windows filter out some UV, but not all of it. I do not know if the LCD panel contains any organic constituents (as opposed to inorganic). By "organic" I mean organic chemistry (containing carbon-linked molecules), not colloquial "organic."
