Hello, after checking for possible defects, what should I do with the phone before actually using it? Shall I leave the battery to run to zero before recharging it? I recall that this was suggested to improve the battery life of the MBP many years ago. Thanks.

Use an iPad charger for the Plus models. The regular phone charger supplied with the iPhone is very slow.
Which iPad charger do you recommend? Do you have a model number? A family member has one which came with the old iPad 2.
That should work. It should just be a 12W charger. I don't think the charger brick has changed on the iPad since the iPad was introduced.
From the Apple site, it seems that the iPad 2 uses 10W charger. Please correct me if I am wrong.
ALL Apple charger blocks (5W, 10W and 12W) are compatible with all iOS devices. The only caveat is that the 5W charger will charge iPads EXTREMELY slowly - like possibly "days". Otherwise, no issues with any of the charger blocks and any of the iOS devices.
You should go through EVERY item in "Settings" and disable everything you don't use such as background app refresh, Location Services > System Services (Frequent Locations, HomeKit, Location-Based iAds, Location Based Alerts, Share My Location, WiFi Networking, Frequent Locations, Diagnostics & Usage, Popular Near Me, Routing & Traffic), WiFi Assist, Handoff & Suggested Apps, etc... Understanding these settings and disabling all of them that you don't use will massively improve privacy, performance, battery life.
Do NOT, purposely drain modern smartphone or laptop batteries. They perform best and last the longest if you just use them normally and plug them in each night regardless of the charge. About the only thing you can do to reduce their life is to purposely discharge them to low levels often.

The use of "days" was referring to trying to charge a full sized iPad with the 5W charger. The 5W charger will charge the iPhone 6S Plus quite well, albeit more slowly than either a 10W or 12W charger.

I cannot say for sure. I charge my phone overnight, every night - as do many/most iPhone owners. The 5W charger, which comes in the box with all iPhones will charge up your iPhone quite well over night. As a reference, the 10W charger will charge all iPhone 6 versions twice as fast as the 5W charger. Apple has since replaced the initial 10W iPad charger with a 12W version. That 12W charge will charge the iPhone 2.1 times as fast as the 5W charger.
Ah, I did not realize that. You can use that...it will still be better than the 5W one they supply with the iPhone.
Yeah, you are absolutely right, just the handset without charging it till it get dead. you will have an understanding on its battery life span.
