I just found this out and want to share in case there's anybody who didn't know. Say you have a Mac Pro that you would like to have use an Apple power cord. All you've got is a 2004 - 2006 era iMac power cable. You'd like to use that for your Mac Pro, but the circular thing at the end won't let it fit fully into the socket. Here's what you do.
Here's your cord in question.
Here's the socket at the back of the machine.
You need to physically pull the circular piece back, off of the plug itself. You will see on the front of the piece that there are protrusions to attach back to the plug.
Now with the plastic circle out of the way, it's a clean, working fit. Hope I helped anyone who would have benefited from that.
Personally, I found that another really neat design choice by Jobs-era Apple. Just another tiny detail, like the little lock piece that flips up under the cover lock at the back of the Power Mac G5s and Mac Pros.
