iPod What to do with a flaky iPod (photo)

That is, the first ones with color screens.

Anyways, this ipod is on its last legs...it works, but sometimes I have difficulty powering it on/off. Sometimes turns off when I'm using it, and the buttons are... "sticky". I would say it's at a functioning level of 30% or so. Anything that can be salvaged from it or should I just recycle the beast?

I was thinking that I could format it and use it under disk mode as a poor mans external hard drive (just another redundant offsite storage option), or as a pseudo-flash drive.

I would not trust an iPod that behaves like that to be a proper storage device.

I recommend that you rather throw it really hard toward the nearest cement wall, and then buy a new iPod (maybe get an :apple: refurb or even another brand player if you're cash strapped)! That should be fun. :)

Emphasis on the redundant aspect. I was thinking of using it as a 2nd off-site storage in case I lost my main files, my own backups..and simultaneously an act of god demolishes my other off-site storage drive! ;)

Right, well, I knew that (ahem :p ).

Then yes, I suppose that it would a decent redundant backup, since you already have multiple other backups. I actually encrypt its contents (in case it falls into the wrong hands as iPods are prone to do). Remember that the more offsite backups you have, the more chance your data will fall into someone else's hands.

At this point it isn't worth that much and it is only an iffy backup that could end up who knows where... I would suggest trashing it and getting a new one.
 
If you want to buy a new one bring it in and they will give you a discount if you turn the old one in to them. It doesn't have to be working 100% it just has to have a battery. :)

My dad just did this with his old Photo.
