What to do with my 27" (need advice)

I may get flamed for this.

I need advice on what to do with my 27” iMac i7. It’s a week 6 and a good one over all. It has a little bit of backlight bleeding and slight yellow but it really is not noticeable.

I have been thinking about just returning it, getting store credit and to wait for the new wave of iMacs to be released which shouldn’t be too long from now.

In the mean time the only thing I’ll really miss is the screen real estate – otherwise my 15” MBP will do me just fine.

I honestly just don’t want to miss out on hopefully perfected screens later down the road with a small speed bump or even price drop.

What would you do? Would you keep it (even with having another Mac), exchange it (it’d be my 5th), or simply return it and wait?

Well, it's a purely personal decision but based on you having the MBP and seeming happy enough using that then I can understand your train of thought. The next revision may see the introduction of the ATI 5XXX series of GPU's which would be an attractive improvement. HOWEVER - who knows when Apple will bump the iMac - could be another 5 months possibly more, maybe less but none of us have a crystal ball.

I would return it as you already have 15" MBP so you won't have to be without a computer. You can buy a nice 24" monitor for your MBP and wait for problem-free iMac

As far as I know, 24" is yellow-free

There is not such a thing as a PERFECT display. There are gradient problems on 24" ACDs, on 26" EIZOs and so on ... You can find proofs of this in every manufacturer's support forum.

The point is: is this acceptable or not? In some cases yes, in others definitely not.
But this whole issue about defective iMac's displays ('cause severals surely are), is shifting all the forum in a search for something almost impossible to obtain

You posted a screenshot of this last night and many of us told you it looked just fine. Honestly, I think you're letting this forum get to you in terms of reading about every little complaint written. What you're not grasping, is some of it is justified and some not. If you can't deal with it, return it.

Don't take this as a flame, but why did you create another thread after a few of us said your screen backlight bleed was fine? If you felt the need to create a whole new thread after last nights posting of your pics then you're obviously not happy, just return it.
One note, trying to avoid backlight bleed isn't an easy task. Many LCD's have it. You're gonna have to get off the OCD wagon at some point and start using the computer, rather than analyze it's small imperfections from a consumer mass produced product.

That's true. Only some professional displays like NEC and EIZO have very low fail/defective rate but even they can have a defective display.

There can never be defective-free consumer level product...

I second that.
I'm selling professional displays to professional people with much more gradients or bleeding than some of the iMacs returned here.

Besides from the 4 cores, I believe he wanted the big screen real estate which I do too. I do video editing and occassional photography, and the iMac's 27" screen is a blessing to have.

I think that's normal, if you can afford it, to use a notebook on-the-go and an all-in-one at home.

Thanks to everyone who replied. I am happy with my iMac, I'm just not sure if this one is good enough to settle for. I posted that picture last night and yes compared to others it is very good but unlike some of you say, yes - no display is perfect yet none of the other big screen lcd's I've owned have had a "backlight bleed."

I didn't make this thread to complain, so please don't think of it like that - I just don't want to feel like I could've gotten a better screen and asked the forum's opinion.

After some thinking today I think I will keep it and open a case with Apple, see what they say or can do.

And to Doug: I'm more than happy with my MBP. But like I said I want (and sort of NEED) a bigger display. I don't shoot as often as I used to but I do every now and then. My options were either 2 24" ACD's to use with my MBP, a 30" ACD - but for those prices I might as well get the "best" Mac outside of the Mac Pro for a little more.

To end this: the reason I want to make sure I have a GOOD machine is because I don't plan on updating to another computer for more than a couple years.

If there is no yellow and the color is even from top to bottom keep it.

If there is yellow, I would call for a replacement or do the panel swap as a last resort.

no yellow that warrants a replacement. this one is very decent yellow-wise. when a trusted fix is out, I'll swap.
