Have a quad q6600 with a bunch of drives and 8GB ram. I'd like to turn it into a network time machine storage unit for my iMac and my wife's. Is there anything else mac related that I can use this machine for? Feels like a waste using a quad and 8GB for just network storage.

What OS would you recommend putting on there? I have licenses for Win7 and Win2008. I've seen some tutorials for ubuntu but had a lot of difficulty getting it setup on that machine.

I have an old PC running as a server for my Macs, using a Windows Server 2003 license. I plan on replacing this with a Mac OS Server soon when money allows, but right now, it is doing nothing but sharing printers, and providing a place for me to throw files.

I have both my iTunes library and my iPhoto library on a networked xp box. I was using a server 2003 license but I wanted to run iTunes on the server. Reason, to sync my apple tv to. I didn't want my other machines having iTunes running all the time. So I went back to xp.

I have both our machines accessing the iPhoto files and our iTunes library. Seems to work. The only hassle is if you add new music/movies you have to do a manual update on the other two machines. I had an applescript that did this for me, but it broke with SL. So I am trying to do another one.

Anything specific you are looking at?

Just trying to get a feel for what's possible. My wife and I each have our own iphoto and itunes library. It would be really nice to share them and have that available via an apple tv (yet to be purchased).
