I'm assuming that a MBP purchased with 4Gb will have 2x2. If I wanted 8Gb, I assume the only option would be to buy 8Gb (4x4) and replace the 2x2. Is there a market for the 2x2 I would be removing from the MBP? What do most people do with this RAM that they replace?

what to do with old MBP RAM if buying 8Gb aftermarket?

I'm probably not going to get it - I'm just researching right now. I thought maybe you could get the 8Gb much cheaper than the Apple price. It doesn't look like there's any huge deals out there, so 4Gb will be enough for me.
Drill holes in the corner, add earring hooks and give them to your girl. She'll love you or slap you.

To elaborate on this point a tad bit further. Apple is notorious for stealing your third-party ram if you send it in to get fixed. it does not happen everytime, but it's best to switch it. What they do with that ram, we only we wish we could know, but we thank our respective higher power that they don't steal hard drives in the same fashion.

If you have to send it in for repair place the original RAM back in.
There are two reasons for this .....
1) Apple will remove the 3rd party ram and hopefully return it to you, ours came back in a plastic bag taped to the lid.
2) If the 3rd Party Ram has failed, putting the original memory back in and testing it yourself may save you the return of the notebook.
The same thing goes for the Hard Drive - keep the original
