What to do with the iTunes folder

Inside my ~/Music folder there be an iTunes folder and a Music folder. I assume the iTunes folder is old and unused, but...

a) How did this happen, and b) can I safely throw it in the trash?

Check the Music App and see where it points to for your Media files. I have both iTunes and Music folders, the old iTunes folder contains my Music (and that's where my Music App is pointing to) and the newer Music folder only has the metadata files (and is way smaller than the iTunes folder).

a) When Music was released it took over from iTunes. But it didn't import the files from the iTunes folder to its own, in case the user still wanted to keep using iTunes.
