Gah! Plymouth
What to put next into my powermac

(dual 1.8 4slot)

I have 2GB of RAM 16X DL DVD burner and only 80GB 7200RPM HD, plus the 9650 256MB vid card (which i don't plan on changing)

It is a toss up from maxing out the RAM (4GB) or adding in a raptor 74GB 10,000RPM HD and a 250GB internal HD plus an encolsure for the already existing 80GB HD.

What do you people think?

I use it for photoshop, webdesign and general things. Sometimes some heavy photoshop use.

My vote is for a savings account. Or more HD space IF you need it (but not a 10k, super duper drive).

Hey eva01,

We basically have the same Power Mac (although I have a 6800 Ultra DDL in mine) and I vote for the WD Raptor. I recently bought one of these to use as the boot drive on my Power Mac they are absolutely amazing. The fast access times are very noticable in daily use, apps just seem to open as soon as you click on them. I have a 320 GB WD3200JD that I used to use as my boot drive I just use it for storage now and I'm loving the machine. Get the hard drive you wont be sorry.

If you don't mind me asking which dual layer burner did you buy? I've still got the standard super drive in mine and I'd like to upgrade it. Also do all your apps work with it?

I agree with saving the money, unless you're in need of more power/speed right now. Other than hard-drive space, that's a nice system.

It's always a pain spending money on needless upgrades, then having no money when something else actually needs replacing!

I was wondering whether the Raptor's have any reliability issues? (I've heard some gamers prefer using these in a mirrored RAID config since they can fail more regularly than 7,200rpm drives - perhaps they meant striped RAID for the extra access speed)

We have a server at work w/40 of the 74GB Raptors in it. I would say one dies on average every 6 months. That's not terrible, but not stellar.

I ordered a 2GB module for my iMac 20" today... maxing it out at 2.5GB and let me tell you... it feels great.

A couple days away and my mac will be as good as it gets.

Woot! Go for it!

Pioneer 109

Haven't tried many programs. The only thing i notice is it can take a bit of time for the DVD player to eject.

But i love it

Also money is definitely not an issue here.
