I would be using a mac for the internet and word processing and I'm not sure which mac would be overkill

For those things alone, a mini or macbook would be perfect.

If a little more power is a concern, the iMac would be the choice.

(I think there should be a "What is right for me?" feature on Apple's website. Let the user check some boxes of what they do, and show them a list of suitable computers)

If you're doing just word processing and surfing, you could get away with anything from a used G3 iMac to a refurb G4 Mac Mini.

If you want a new Mac, though, I'd get the lowest-spec Intel Mac mini.

well is the base model of the macbook fine for that?

the 512mb of ram would be fine.

But with all Macs, more is always better, and you'll always notice it.

I'd recommend getting the base MacBook from Apple, and an additional amount (512mb to 1gb) of ram from somewhere else (Apple overcharges for ram big time).

iwant a laptop but im not sure if anything above the base model would be overkill?

Also how would boot camp run on this machine? JW

I'm sure you can run windows xp on the macbook just fine. Seems like a good deal. Again, baseline macbook or education imac which is 899 is a good deal.

the new macbook is almost perfect. Its cheap, but powerful enough to run programs like Office and Firefox for many years to come. Go the MacBook. You will love it.

but 512Mb and 60GB will be fine?
For your stated needs, yes. Unless you are writing multiple epic novels in your wordprocessor...

Stick with Universal Binaries on OS X and/or use Windows apps in Boot Camp and your 512 MB shoud be fine.
