Having put most of my money into cameras I'm late to get up to speed on editing. I've got an 09 MacPro5,1 with the ATI 5870 Graphics card which needs an upgrade.

I'm currently running Davinci 10.1 and all the Adobe CC software. As you can imagine Davinci is running really badly. Premiere and After Effects are just slow. It seems both would benefit from CUDA.

Hoping not to upgrade the power supply at this time what would you recommend I get.

Thanks.

There are a bazillion other threads on this.

The fastest "supported" graphics card is the eVGA 680 GTX. Anything else is likely unsupported so YMMV.

Also note that you will likely encounter fan related issues if you put any kind of third party graphics card in that system (supported or unsupported). This is a known issue, and you can search the forum if you'd like more information.

I've searched this over several times and most answers are a year old or more. I'm truly not trying to cause anyone any trouble, just trying to get up to speed editing video.

From what I've read the GTX 770 4GB might be a good choice for this. Though there are faster cards out there I'm wondering if this would be pretty fast for a reasonable amount of money.

I'm an OK system person, not as smart as many of you here.... more of a user I guess. With that in mind I'd appreciate any constructive help with this.

Thanks,

Hi Between2tides. From what I read, the GTX770 is faster than the GTX680 though you'll just have to check that the power consumption of the GTX770 does not exceed the Mac Pro's 225w maximum. Other PC flashed cards you may consider are the 570GTX, 660 or 670GTX. You can check eBay for PC cards flashed for Mac.

I have a reflashed HD 7970, Premiere CC picks up the card as a D700 without any mods to text files.
