I usually use MplayerX because I love:

1- When a video is playing, it stays in front of everything else.
2- You can resize the video that is playing with your fingers with your cursor on the video.
3- There is no "play" "pause" button that shows up around the video, and is hidden unless you mouse over the video.

Yosemite makes #2 on my list annoying because there is lag on the resize and it looks like there is no fix for it, any other alternatives?

I typically use VLC, but it's a major battery hog in Yosemite. The UI lag drives me nuts, too.

If Quicktime played MKV files, I'd probably use that exclusively.

Yeah so true in regards to VLC.
Do you also have the problem that most videos, like AVIs, turn all purple/pinkish and pixelated for a few seconds when you are trying to scroll forward with the scroll bar? (which by the way is so ffing tiny in full screen). Same videos on Windows don't do this.
I also have MP4s that have sound but no video on OS X but again are working fine on Windows. This has been annoying me since Mountain Lion/Mavericks and they need to optimise OS X or VLC. Despite this its still the best media player around for OSX (tried mplayerX and didn't like it)

VLC, unfortunately MplayerX is abandonware :(

Anyone know whats going on with MPlayerX?
I noted that the last update was in January '14.

Just checked their homepage. The front page shows a media player window with Yosemite-style buttons and OSD, but the rest of the site shows the old design. And there's no update to the app it self. The latest version appears to be 1.0.22.1 (1785).

1.0.22.1 has some compatibility issues with Yosemite...
