Fickle iPhone users tiring of apps
February 24, 2009 - 10:38AM

More than 500 million applications for the Apple iPhone have been downloaded from the California company's online App Store, but a new study indicates that users quickly lose interest in them.

The study by Pinch Media found that fewer than five percent of iPhone users are still actively using an application a month after downloading it.

Apple iPhone users loss interest in free programs slightly faster than in paid ones, said Pinch Media, a company which offers advise to developers of applications for the hot-selling smartphone.

"Paid applications generally retain their users longer than free applications, although the drop-off is still pretty steep," it said.

It said only one percent of total downloads have a long-term audience.

The company said the "biggest usage differentiator" is category.

"Games are used for longer periods than any other type of application," Pinch Media said.

The study also found that only 30 percent of the iPhone users who purchase an application from the App Store use it the next day.

Apple announced last month that more than 500 million applications for the iPhone have been downloaded since the App Store was opened in July.

More than 15,000 programs are currently available from the App Store.

For the study, Pinch Media analysed 30 million downloads from the App Store.

I would say I hardly use an app after a week.

I have been bitten too many times and I am extremely careful about buying any app now.

I can believe that, but i also think some of the apps are downloaded for random occasions. I mean the handy carpenter app is pointless until you actually need it.

It could also mean that most of the applications are pretty much rubbish with regards to programming, quality and design.

wow, i wish i got paid to do that study. some of the stats are kinda funny... "people play games for longer period of time than other apps". yeah, like i'm gonna spend half an hour on my to-do app or on weather... well, bottomline is most apps are useless, so i'm not surprised at that outcome. i personally download free stuff all the time, and after using it once, i delete it immediately.

My use is just the opposite. I have 12 games (70% paid for) on my iPhone and I play one maybe once a month. I am a gamer and play online games daily.

I have used the following apps daily since their release:
ABContacts
Evernote
TouchTodo
AccuWeather
ooTunes
Pandora
BillMinder
Gazette
iTv
AppSniper

At least once a week I use Now Playing, Fox Sports

I also use Phone, SMS, Mail, Safari, iPod and Calender daily

The games on the iPhone are just not important to me and having the utilities and functions of the other are plus I love music which is what I kill my battery on the most.
