What will happen to my photos

I am a long-time Mac user and I am little confused/concerned about my photos with iCloud Photo Library. As of now, I have about (12 years) 300 GB of photos in iPhoto separated into libraries by year. I am sure nothing will happen to them in iPhoto but what if I upgrade to the new Photos app that is supposed to be coming? Will the application try to upload all of my photos to the cloud? Also, what happens to the photos taken with my iPhone when I go above 5 GB? I don't plan on purchasing any more storage space as I currently use another cloud service.

You don't have to use iCloud to store your photos. The reality is that storing 300gigs of images in any sort of cloud service would be costly, silly, and make you a bandwidth pig.

I'd suggest that you look at alternatives such as Lightroom, or wait until Photos for Mac ships. It will allow you to save/store images in any location you want - your computer hard drive, external drive, iCloud, etc.

Who knows what the new Photos app will do. Apple is not telling anyone.

Your current system is not optimal. Using one library per year forces you to remember what year you took a photo in to be able to find it. Better to place them all in one library and then sort them by year if you want

I doubt you will be forced to place all your data in iCloud.

Thanks for the feedback. My main concern is losing my pictures. I understand I don't have to use iCloud photo library, but it would be a nice feature to have access to all of my photos. I guess I will use iCloud photo library for my iPhone photos.
