What will iCloud mean for AppleTV?

The latest news that iCloud may be a Time Capsule server-like situation brings up questions for me.

Will this be the elusive iTunes server?

Is this why AppleTV doesn't have a hard drive?

Will this hold apps for AppleTV?

Will iCloud work with my Drobo?
 
Well if my Broadband speed is anything to go by iCloud won't have any impact on AppleTV. Then there are issues of data allowances and reliable speed. It's a start but iCloud and me won't be making friends anytime soon.
 
Same here. With around 3Tb+ of ATV media, I cant see me waiting for that to 'eventually' upload to the iCloud, only for me to draw it down on an 'on demand' basis. Watching video for me is not a mobile device thing, other then news, youtube type stuff, and thats already in the clouds. I like a big screen when I watch a movie.

I think that's his point. It's looking like iCloud might turn a TimeCapsule into a computer-free iTunes server.

I doubt it. Home sharing seems to be a pretty clear statement of how Apple sees content management. They've never shown any desire to follow the centralized server approach the MS targeted. Rather their model seems to highly decentralized, with individual devices managing their own chunk of the library, and clever software to seamlessly merge it altogether when devices look for content within the sharing group. AirPlay is further pushing in that direction.

My guess is that other than mobile streaming, they're probably looking at centralized state, I.E. your songs wont necessarily be on the Time Capsule, but your last played song history will be. Currently devices need to sync to transfer where you paused a movie, the Time Capsule could easily pick up the job of automagically caching and pushing that state to devices as they come on and go offline.

We'll find out soon enough anyway.
 
Patience everyone... Apple can only do so much at once, and as seen in the past, AppleTV is the low end of the totem pole for Apple and their revenue stream. At one point I seem to remember it being referred to as a "hobby". With that said, I wouldn't be surprised if the iCloud eventually does video too, but for the time being, Apple needed to dedicate their legal team's resources on securing licenses for music content, and also... Wow, if they did video, they would need a lot more then that giant data center in North Carolina..

Never the less, I am VERY disappointed they didn't mention AppleTV support for iTunes match. I am REALLY hoping once you match all your tunes you'll be able to play them on AppleTV. That will truly allow me to at least play music during a party without having to have my macbook pro on. ;)

For video, I have my NAS, jailbreak, and XBMC to prevent me from having to use a computer to stream the movies. ;)
