Hello!

What will replace the Core 2 Duo? Will there be a replacement of similar size/shape etc, like the difference between Core Duo and Core 2 Duo?

I am asking because I am wondering whether when a new chip is released, I could install it in my new iMac.

Any thoughts would be appreciated :)

Thanks,

Chris

Since the iMac's chip isn't soldered, you will be able to replace the chip.

If I am correct, the future in Intel mobile CPUs is going to be a new chipset, the "Santa Rosa" chipset, with updated Meroms to take advantage of the new 800MHz FSB.

I believe that all future designs for Intel mobile CPUs, after the Santa Rosa chipset is released, will require the new chipset, so they wont work with the current iMacs/Minis.

Someone correct me if I'm incorrect, though.

Actually, Kendall, the difference will be even more significant.

Starting with the 800MT/S FSB version of Merom coming out to match the Santa Rosa platform/Crestline chipset, future Intel mobile chips will be using a new socket, "Socket P" which is incompatible with the current Socket M used by Merom and Yonah.
