I think that we'll see Santa Rosa and LED displays, but it will be in early 2008. I still think that they will be using Intel's integrated graphics, though.
dang i wanted better graphics, i know this might sound dumb because its been explained a billion times but why is SR so much better then the old chip?
It isn't really. Faster FSB 800MHz vs 667MHz. Ability to address 4GB of memory vs 3.3GB Supposedly better power management but probably not by much.
The X3100 GPU is the real improvement in Santa Rosa. It will be a big improvement over the GMA950 and includes hardware T&L which is a requirement in many modern games.
And just to clear things up. Santa Rosa is a platform. The chipset is called GM965.
Yeah.... we know that Apple has promised LED backlighting in the next year or so. I would think Santa Rosa will show up fairly soon, like in the next 4-6 months, bringing along with it all the niceties of the newer integrated GPU and a very slight bump of one step in processor speed. And undoubtedly something or other to whine about.
Dedicated graphics memory is a key component that seperates the Macbook from the more expensive Macbook Pro. If you need the better graphics, go with the macbook pro. Even if the Macbook does get the new X3100, it won't be much better.
I guess its all relative really. The X3100 is about 3 times faster than the GMA950 but it is about 3 times slower than the Radeon X1600 which was in the old MacBook Pros.
i don't think led will be in their next update.
they would upgrade the 17" screen before the 13" screen (to distinguish the pro and consumer lines)

They've gotta update it to LED eventually. 13" screens will be easier to get and less expensive with LED than 17" ones will be. I can easily see the first update of 2008 (what I think will be the next macbook update) having LED as a standard.
Or possibly during Leopard release

I hope we get a dedicated video card. Even if it stays at 64MB, it's better than Intel Integrated. Also, I am hoping to see 3GB RAM upgrade. 4GB would be awesome, but doubt it will happen with the new MacBook Pro updates. I'd like to see something that would tempt me to upgrade (basically speeds faster than my Core Duo and worth the money). I want a BlackBook, but I need the update that will give me reason to buy a new one.
I'm thinking maybe it'll get a decent update before the Leopard release to make it more suitable for the new, more demanding Leopard features in the GUI, etc.

I doubt dedicated graphics are on the cards. Apple has seen such success with its integrated graphics products that it won't likely change things in the future. With Santa Rosa, 4GB will be the new maximum. Processor speeds will be 2.2 and 2.4GHz and MBPs will be bumped to 2.4 and 2.6GHz. Nothing else is available to Apple.
Possibly, but Apple has a lot less invested in this supposed pro/consumer distinction than the fanbase does. The limiting factor of rolling out LED backlights is that it's harder to get them working in quantity on larger displays. Meaning it's easier to upgrade the Macbook than the MBP17" or the iMac or the cinema displays.
A dedicated video card would be nice, and sounds like a possibility with more games coming to the Mac.
BUT, the reality is that most users don't play games or don't want to play games in a 13" screen.
I haven't played a single game in months, so the MB is perfect for me. And a lot of people are the same. If you want to play games then buy a desktop and play them there, much better.

actually im kind of the same, ive never played games on a computer, thats what i have a 360 and wii for but it would be good if i was traveling and was craving some games.
. So with SR the MB will be able to address 4GB of RAM?

Should do but that is only a 20% improvement over what it can do now.
It is less expensive than the 17", true, but the MacBook is also a significantly less expensive computer at almost 1/3 the price of the 17" MacBook Pro. Do you honestly believe the parts in the 17" costs 3x as much as those in the MacBook?
They have better margins on the pros, they can afford to put in better parts for them first.
I'd like to see a dedicated video card not for gaming but for the ability to use the maximum RAM (potentially 3GB or 4GB) solely on the computing of the machine, not sharing that with supplying video and GUI to the computer. Especially with Leopard coming, I think it'd be a good move.
Plus, I think that many of the target gamers have MacBooks...teenagers. Not many teenaged gamers can afford a full blown MacBook Pro. The MacBook Pro should be for more professional young adult or adult users that use their skills for a living.
