I know everyone's attention is on MWSF, but what is happening with OS X 10.3? Has anyone got any idea what major new features might be under development?

One of the things I'd love to see is a Virtual desktop. It makes you so much more productive, you can keep several different sets of windows open as you like them and very quickly flip between. Definitely makes for easier less cluttered desktop.

This is fully and completely a personal wish list, but oh well..

1. more Sherlock channels (ie: watson tv scheduler, amazon, package tracker, sports scores)

2. better audio (true 5.1 dvd player)

3. automatic rendezvous (itunes, turn on stays on, )

4. better iCal/mail/addressbook integration

5. iChat upgrade (make phone calls and send pdf faxes using address book, voice chat and webcam)

6. chimera as default browser (tabs baby! add autofill fields function)

7. use quicktime as viewer for eyetv or formac studio tvr player

8. .mac upgrades

Sources say that it will be packged with iMidget. A portable butler who will bring you cheeseburgers and pet your cat while you are computing.

Good idea, would be nice to see more localised ones (not everyone lives in America) with more encouragement for developers to create their own.

Surely you'd also need a hardware interface to get it out? Optical audio out?

3. automatic rendezvous (itunes, turn on stays on, )
Not sure I get what you mean.

4. better iCal/mail/addressbook integration
Good point

5. iChat upgrade (make phone calls and send pdf faxes using address book, voice chat and webcam)
Could be useful, but I'm not totally convinced.

Yep, the gecko engine rocks. Need to ensure it integrates well with mail (or your choice of client).

7. use quicktime as viewer for eyetv or formac studio tvr player

8. .mac upgrades
What sort of upgrades?

i'd like to see the 5:1 whether Apple makes an adaptor or what... just that the OS uses it natively...

and for the love of god LABELS!

:)

The only nice feature in windows is the ability to switch to another user without logging out completely first, and I expect to see that in 10.3. Also, as someone else already mentioned; LABELS!

Features i'd like to see:

1, Desktop Printing
2, UK based Sherlock Channels with more such as an apple TV/training network i.e. viewable movies and presentations, how to do's etc.
3, A built in HTML editor/creator like the HTMLedit that was included with the Public Beta.
4, Address Book to store documents with a particular person or group card

hmmmm

iMidget seems like a good idea...especially the cheeseburger part.

but for real, i'd like to see something I miss from Classic.
A window that shows what programs are running and how much ram they're using. If 10.2 already has this, please enlighten me..

Also, make the address book work with the dymo labelwriter, so i can print address labels.

Type top in the terminal
Or ps -aux

Two ways even ;)

1 - Use /Applications/Utilities/Process Viewer.app

2 - Use /Applications/Utilities/Terminal.app and type "top" [enter] at the command line.

how about something that i think i saw mentioned here at one point.

iSite - hosting your own domains, and websites through the sharing panel.

most people think it's a big deal to host a website, apple is really good at making 'difficult' tasks simple - iMovie/iDVD, etc.

i think more documentation would be nice, i'm learning more about the Unix stuff all the time, maybe we could be enlightened by more Unix tips in newsletters, or Help functions.

Desktop Printing

It's not quite the same, but if you leave "Print Center" in the dock or make an alias on the Desktop you can drag documents onto it to automatically print to the default printer without opening the associated app. It does not close Print Center when it finishes, however.
I think this may have been a new addition in 10.2.3.

5.1 Surround

It's not an Apple made solution, but:
M-Audio makes a very small box called the Sonica that connects via USB and puts out 5.1 via an optical port (S/PDIF). Granted Apple DVD Player does not put out 5.1 (yet), but M-Audio points users to an OSX DVD player called VideoLAN Client that is open source and far from perfect.

Unix yes, but how do you do that in Windows?

I agree with whoever said about a iWebpage iapp. That would be great.

A iWeb for webpage viewing based on chimera would be good too. Full integration with the other iapps would be nice.

This may be a small gripe, but my mom likes the 800x600 resolution, and I like the 1024x768 resolution. When I switch from the former to the latter, the icons on my desktop get all jumbled up. This has been going on since 10.0, and its still in 10.2. If anyone knows any fixes, please answer. Thanks.

i have lots of things that i'd like to see in 10.3, but it should be fairly easy to make an educated guess about what will actually appear from previous news items.

1. Junkyard - it is thought that this new copyright has something to do with disk recovery (reclaiming deleted files) and other disk utility goodies, which leads to...
2. Improved filesystem - apple recently hired the guy who designed BFS (the befilesystem) and introduced journaling in 10.2.2. microsoft is going to have a pretty snazzy filesystem when longhorn debuts, so apple will have to pull off something pretty spectacular.
3. Core system improvements - darwin and mach are slow, they need to be improved, this is just obvious
4. Integration of Mobile tech and networking - this incorporates much of what will be seen tomorrow at mwsf. bluetooth, airport, ip-over-firewire, firewire2, ipod, lifestyle device, rendezvous, and the iapps will all become more seamlessly integrated than they are now, allowing your entire household, office, building, city (ok, maybe not that far) to be instantaneously connected with high-bandwith, zero-config technology (your computer is in florida, you plug your ipod into a phillips dvd player in singapore and have instant access to all of your files.

it's easy to draw these conclusions from the news of the past few months and after analyzing the direction in which apple has been headed. although, tomorrow morning, i could very well be putting my foot into my mouth :D

This only has to do with Fatty's "Microsoft is going to have a pretty snazzy filesystem." From what I've heard, Microsoft has since canceled Longhorn and is going straight to Blackcomb, but still isn't going to be available till around 2005.

that really had nothing to do with this thread, just thought I'd throw that in there :)

thanks for the info 000111one111000, i did not realize that ms had stepped up it's schedule. i have not heard too much about upcoming ms releases, but apparently their next filesystem will be sql based (which should actually be quite interesting) and supports really advanced features like journaling and file metadata:rolleyes: . i can't even imagine what kind of crazy system os x will be by 2005 when you consider that a year and a half ago, apple was still supporting 9 because of osx's shortcomings (no shortcomings now;)).

assuming that it will be at least 8 months until the release of 10.3 and looking at what has just been released, i think that it is safe to say that apple will make heavy use of rendezvous in 10.3 as well as making great advances on the unix front (x11). i also think that by that time, apple will begin to solidify it's "office killer" strategy by unifying the iapps, keynote, and some currently unknow wordprocessor/spreadsheet (nisus/gnumeric?).

i'm hoping that firewire800 allows apple to create tiny machines that are easily expandable with no need for pci cards and that mess. imagine a wireless monitor/keyboard/mouse that hooked into a notebook sized computer whose graphics/audio could be upgraded with firewire enclosures, not cards.

p.s. i had my first involved session with xp today and i really can't believe that people find it useful. i would never buy a microsoft product, ever, so my opinion is skewed, but damn, i actually prefer '95 to xp, it was the ugliest pile of "task wizard" rubbish i've ever seen, and surprisingly slow on a new high end dell (ps7's interface was about twice as slow as photoshop elements on my g3 imac, maybe it was just a fluke).

Why do you say that, is there any evidence it's 8 months off?

Also I hope Apple make some improvements to the finder. It's still too clunky and definitly needs some usability work, and they should definitely offer virtual desktops as an option.

the .x releases of os x have generally been spaced about a year appart. i'm just guessing at the date from what the schedule of the others has been.
