Hi guys,

Since there are a ton of "I hate apple!" threads as always after a release I'm trying to liven things up by asking what will you be using your new macbook air for???

I bought one to do coding, Unity, and, even though it will be awfully cramped, some light Maya. I have a Mac Pro for the heavy stuff but the macbook air will be the perfect augmentation machine. Its light and fast so I can travel with it and still get work done. I travel with a LOT of stuff (usually camera gear or a snowboard) so the MBP is too thick. (Plus I have a macbook pro) the air will be perfect! :)

It will be my carry-everywhere machine. MBP13" will stay home from now on.

I have a Mac Pro in my office, and MBP13" at home for heavy load of work, and a Mac Mini as media server/player so MBA is just filling the gap when I'm on the go.

MBA 11" will be used for office doc editing, researches, basecamp management, and some 2D design work. Looks like I can switch my commuter Timbuk2 bag to XS from S. :)

Assuming my MBP return works out, the Air be my main Mac. Notes for class, basic Internet, papers, iTunes....nothing to fancy. Currently it handled by my i5 MacBook Pro, but the plan is to replace it with an Air and later an iMac or Mac Mini for heavy work. The only thing I'll miss my MBP for is for handbrake and VMware(but XP will prolly still work out Air, hopefully)...and I can use a Mac Pro at work for handbrake.

I am so looking forward to getting back to writing a diary, or having a proper little mean machine to write notes or prose on the go or on the sofa/bed.

I guess I will have to wreck the wifi though If I want to have any sort of concentration beyond the web.:D:cool::apple:

nice post op btw, good to see positivity in these forums.

Wouldn't mind to swap my al MacBook for an 11" MBA as I've gone back to using a desktop as my primary machine.

Though not sure where that would leave my iPad! 11" MBA and iPad kind of cross over.

I'll be doing fairly light work. I'll spend most of my time in Office, Mail, Seesmic, and Chrome - typical student stuff.

Right now I'm running around with an iPad. While the iPad is mostly a good experience, I'm simply tired of the lack of file management, and the difficulty that comes with taking notes during a fast-paced lecture.

When I bought iPad I wanted a netbook that wasn't crappy like a netbook is - now the 11.6" MBA does just that.

I am not sure where my ipad stands nowadays either!:D And, boy do I regret buying that keyboard dock...

But I guess the ipad stands everywhere, it's there to be picked up, enjoyed, browse through a few pdfs, surf the web without breaking you back hunching, look at a map, remotely control your air, Frisbee it, lol, we have got to sort out our device priorities and duties for sure. What I would love my ipad to do would be to be large remote control for my itunes library and apple tv, my itunes library residing on a server.

p.s. by the looks of it, these 11" babies are going to fly off the shelves!!

This is a very interesting topic. And it's like apple new my bonus from my work was coming in. DAMN YOU! APPLE!!!

the key is to eliminate redundancy. I'm having that issue. I'm running a C2D that gets its battery drained once very year. (it's literally attached to my desktop at all times). I never turn it off. I have an Ipad which i remotely connect to that macbook to stream videos with Airvideo. I try to use dropbox and other cloud computing software to make my ipad more productive. My issue is that the MBA is going either eliminate my MB 2.2GHZ or its going to eliminate my ipad. The problem is I love my ipad so I'm trying to see if i can carry both. It's great to have a computer that will have instant on and with dropbox, i have better sync with both my MB at home and my MBA. (The Ipad dropbox app is a P.O.S.). I'm not entirely sold.

These threads are helping. I always want to learn how people are going to use their new toys.

My air won't replace my iPad. Each of my iToys and Mac toys serves a specific purpose:

First off, a little history: I am a student who goes to school online. The stuff I am working on is very intensive and I usually spend a good 18 hours a day in front of my computer working on school work (I also turn in much better quality school work then most people ;) ). School goes year-round with only 3 days break in between semesters. As of now, I am tied to my desk all day since i have no portable computer that is in my possession.

Here is my toys and how I will use them all once the new one arrives:

Macbook Air: Will be for coding in bed, or on the go. It will be a school work machine for when I am not doing heavy graphic stuff. That way I can go bum around at my friends studio and do school work instead of being tied at my desk all day. I can also bring it when I travel if I am in school at that time. It will see a lot of use.

Macbook Pro: This machine, plus a 24inch ACD is on loan to a friend who his helping me make a video game. He is working on the 3D models and graphics while I do the rest (and help with graphics).

iPad: This is my lounge around the house, go to the bathroom, travel (if I don't need to do school work) or play on the internet in bed machine. I love my iPad and use it daily. It also goes to the kitchen with me if I need to look up recipes for what I am cooking or if I want to play on facebook or something while cooking. I also develop for iPad so I need this.

iPhone 4: My phone, and my internet, messenger, etc on the go. I also develop for iPhone so I need this.

iPhone 3Gs: Not my phone, but since I develop for iOS I need it to test on to ensure game compatibility.

Mac Pro: This is my workhorse. When I am doing graphics stuff I am usually in Maya and Photoshop together for texturing, OR Corel Painter (depending on the graphics style). ZBrush usually gets opened along the way and most of the time RipIT and Handbrake are busy ripping my DVD collection to my computer so that my Apple TV has content to play with. I also use Houdini, Unity3D, XCode, Logic (I'm no expert in this one yet ;) ) and have a ton of externals hooked up to this machine. I do a ton of work on this.

So see, you can easily find uses for each device, whether they are practical or not ;) Mine are, I make my living off of computers so I like to have multiple just in case. Normally the Macbook Pro would suffice but its not with me so a Mac Air fills the void perfectly :)

Oh ya I have a linux netbook but thats my "fixin' machine" that I take to fix other peoples stuff. Also it has setemental value since its the computer I took to me when I went to the AMAZING country of New Zealand :) (Too bad I went by myself since none of my friends would go with me :'( )

Also I can't wait to get this air, push the heck out of it and see what these beasts are REALLY capable of :) I'm sure I'll be able to end the "Airs are stripped down computers/glorified netbooks" arguement ;)

Macbook Pro 13" -- pretty heavy to lug around, even though I like the machine. Heavy enough that I don't take it with me unless I have to.

Macbook Air -- going to be the portable workhorse. With the flash memory, RAM upgrade, and two usb ports, it's robust enough for decent work as well as presentations. So when I get the Macbook Air 13", it's going everywhere. No longer have to worry about lugging around that weight.

Can't wait to get it.

im gonna ditch my Macmini (media center plugged into my LCD TV) in favor for an 11" MBA. so when i want to watch movies on my LCD TV, i just plug my external drive to my MBA and plug the MBA to the TV, and since i rarely watch movie, it's better to sell the rarely used Macmini :D

win win solution :D
