I have the 16 Pro, most because of the 120hz screen. I also really like the camera (I take tons of photos of my small kid)
However, I strongly dislike the weight. I dont understand why the make it with a heavier material. Also, it just feels much heaver because the camera house is larger so it feels more front heavy.

Now the 17 base is strongly rumored to also get 120hz.
It's also rumored to be the same size as the Pro (6.3" instead of 6.1").
And because of the much smaller camera house, it will feel much less front heavy.

So what would I be missing if I got the 17 base? Any surprises?
Maybe the RAM will be less, but I live in Europe so I don't get Apple AI anyway lol (and I'm fine just using the Claude or ChatGPT app)
What would I miss in the camera? I'm almost always just going to the camera and use the 1x or 2x zoom. And I often go to Portrait and use the 1x or 2x there. Would photos with those settings be worse on a 17 base, compared to the 16 Pro or 17 Pro? Or is the Pro camera just better at other stuff like 5x and panorama and cinematic and slow motion and stuff like that?

Me too

5x tele shifted the weight distribution, it now sits on top more than ever before

I would love 17 Air to weigh 140-150g just like 13 Mini. I can see myself eagerly downgrading.

16 base has an aluminium frame, 16 Pro has a titanium frame.

It still has titanium, vs aluminium on the base. And titanium is heavier than aluminium.
There is a 30g weight difference, partly for the material choice.

Honestly in your shoes I would just get 17Air. It’s a phone that will be and feel different. I don’t upgrade my phone very often but when I did get 16P that was because this form factor is already perfected and the timing was right for me. But I also got in black which is somewhat unusual for me, partially because it looks the most modern and visually the slimmest of all the colors by far (rumours of 17Air were already in full swing)

Now the regular 17… that is believed to look almost exactly the same as regular 16, don’t see a special appeal in that. Well other than the potential interesting colour options and them finally fixing the refresh rate. It could still be underwhelming though compared to 16P.

Probably a bigger battery? iPhone 16 has a rectangle-shaped battery while the iPhone 16 Pro has an L-shaped battery. Also, a faster USB-C port, higher RAM, higher resolution cameras, smaller bezels, Always On Display, un-binned processor.

I think that's it? Weight is also an issue for me. I might choose the regular Pro instead of Pro Max. I like the screen, but the weight is terrible.

If i were to make the switch, I know I’d be missing the 120Hz display, and the macro camera. Not much else besides that.

This thread is too early. The specifications of the iPhone 17 series is still not yet official, but as for your question:

Compare the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro, that will be your basis what the iPhone 17 Pro will have that the iPhone 17 will not. There will be newer hardware and software features but since there is nothing official yet, you can just look at the differences and weigh in on whether to purchase the iPhone 17, or upgrade to iPhone 17 Pro, or keep your iPhone 16 Pro.
