There is a billion USB C hubs on places like Amazon that includes HDMI plus some USB A and other ports for around $30. That's all you need. Apple sells the digital AV adapter but it's not cheap.

If you have a 4K monitor one thing to keep in mind is that some of the adapters will only do 4K @ 30Hz so you need to pay attention to the specs and make sure it says it supports 4K @ 60Hz. The new version of the Apple adapter does support 4K @ 60Hz but the old one does not so make sure you're grabbing the latest if that's what you go with.

No special software required. It’s all baked in to the OS. As mentioned all you need is the physical connection to the monitor, which in the case of your MBA will require some sort of dongle/adapter. Your only “over the air” option would be to AirPlay your MBA to an AppleTV which would normally be attached to a TV, not a monitor, but if the monitor has an HDMI input I don’t see why it wouldn’t work.

No software required. You can buy a USB C to Digital AV Adapter which has HDMI in it from Apple or use a third party USB C to HDMI cable like Belkin or AmazonBasics or any other brand.
