I have purchased the i5 3.1Ghz because i thought it out ranged the i5 2.7 with a weaker graphic card. But so far.. the benches are not that superb for the 3.1 against the 2.7

And for some reason, i get the feeling that a lot of people dont order the 3.1 and go for the 2.7

At the moment my order is waiting for weeks because i have a BTO with SSD. What would u do if your in my shoes? Ring Apple to change it into a 2.7 and have some money back.. or keep the config for the "future proof statement" ?

Is there anyone out here, that can cheer me up a little to keep the 3.1?

I plan to get the 2.7. I just don't think the GPU in my case warrants the extra $300. The 2.7 is the best priced for what you get in the lineup. If you are doing any significant gaming, keep your 3.1. But I would think with the SSD BTO you would want to offset that with the cheaper 2.7. That's just what I think.

I do 90% working with photoshop and big psd files. 10 % gaming

Then it sounds like the 2.7 would do, but you have to make that decision.

I went for the 3.1GHz iMac solely for the 6970M. This might be the first time the iMac got a truly great GPU for gaming. If you don't game much, I'd save the $300. There is a thread floating around where the user ran Half-Life 2, World of Warcraft, and Team Fortress 2 on a 6770M and the settings were nearly maxed out.

I've just purchased the 27" i5-2500S (aka 2.7/3.7GHz) BTO with SSD and 8GB ram instead the i5-2400 (aka 3.1/3.4GHz) because for me it's better, 30Watt TDP less, more speed with one-two cores only, more price for the cpu only and overall similar speed. I prefer it, and the 6970 also have more heat because the more power.

The 3.1ghz have a better GPU, but if you don't use it, change it (you already know "my" thread about the speed difference ;) )

If you are doing any significant gaming, keep your 3.1

100% agree, but if you not "gaming"…… :D

I thougt that was on a 3.1 (he also did tf2?)

Is photoshop not multicore and opengl ?

Yep, you did my head turning into this problem

I've been wondering about this myself, I don't do much gaming, but I like to feel like I've got something that's going to last a while. So far the 2.7 with an SSD is looking more than adequate for a web developer.

What are the odds of being able to play Portal 2 on this sucker at full tilt?

I think the 3.1 is the iMac (the first? :D ) for gamer… Apple has saved money on the processor in favor of the video card. I'm not a gamer, i don't need the i7-2600 speed (and price) so i've bought (2 hours ago) the 2.7 BTO. With the saved money I can buy an external drive, RAM or other funny things :D and i can also save money on the air conditioned for the less TDP ahaha :D

Pff, same dilemma here. I thought I made my decision, but now I'm in doubt again. The last couple of years I have never played games on my computer (since it's just not possible on my macbook...). But after seeing the gorgeous 27" screen and some videos of portal2, I might want to do a bit of gaming again (although still not much).
So in that case I might need the 3.1Ghz version instead of the low-end. But then it's only 155 euro more (after discount + tax return) to get the i7 with hyperthreading...
So now i'm stuck between these three models :p
