The current Pro design will be replaced much sooner than the Air. The differences between the 2 machines are very limited, unless you want the touch bar or *need* active ventilation for long sustained processes then go with the Air, it has and it will retain better value.

MacBook Pro because the fan is necessary if you fully max out the M1. I did yesterday while editing 8k60 footage and during export the fan went full speed with the SoC being between 70 to 80°C. The Air would have throttled significantly.

MBP purely because I have a MBA and I've never had a MBP before ? (at least not since the Core2Duo days)

But people sure do hate that touchbar.. so maybe I'd return it shortly after

Fanless (MBA) is my preference.

No fans makes the chassis thinner and lighter.

Just like my favorite 12" rMB that was Apple's first fanless Macbook since using Intel chips....

BTW I don't like the gimicky touch bar of the Pro. Never used it on my 16" MBP....

I'd be more likely to trust a computer with a fan for heavy tasks than one without so my preference goes to the Pro. Needless to say the MBP has more battery life, brighter screen, and better speakers too.

Even if the MBP was $100 more than the MBA it would still make sense - but definitely not $250-300 extra.

The MacBook Pro is already thin enough. I don't like the wedge case of the air. Also I don't want throttling and prefer the brighter screen.
