It would depend on whether it was accidental (as the spillage might well be) or on purpose (as hitting it with a sledgehammer might well be).

I'd want them to be shopping for a new computer sharpish.

Why do you ask? I hope you've not willfully destroyed someone's computer and are wondering what your fate might be... ;)

Tell them to buy me a new one of the same spec, if they refuse, then operation eradication would swiftly come into play

If its an accident have a rant at them and claim on there insurance.

If its on purpose ask them to pay, if they do I'd take them to small claims court. Wouldn't care if its a friend/family, if they've bust something that expensive on purpose for no reason I'd take them to court.

Or you could do what my bro did. His boss refused to pay him one month as "money was tight". My bro broke into his bosses house and took everything of value (tv, satelitte, stereo, cooker, fridge etc) and said you get it back when you pay me. The boss called the cops who sided with my brother when asked "why did you take them?" :D

Accident or not, i would expect him/her to offer to get me a new one, without me asking for it. Its the same i would do if i destroyed someone's property.

Now if someone close to me hit my MBP with a sledgehammer on purpose, parent, friend, gf or whatever... they would spend the night in jail. (Better than me hitting them with a sledgehammer).

Er....I'd claim on my house insurance and buy a new one

Although I think my credit card insurance would cover it too, and they pay up a bit quicker.

If it was spillage and on accident, I would hope (but not ask) that they would offer to replace the machine. If they didn't, I would claim it on my home/credit card insurance.

Damage which was intended (including using a sledgehammer) is not on, and I would ask them to replace it.

Just remember, as much as we love our MacBook/Pros, personal relationships will outlast the life of any computer, and shouldn't be damaged, esepciallyif it was an accident.

I speak from experience: a junior (and terribly clumsy) colleague spilled Diet Coke right into the heart of my 12" PowerBook. Although I was upset, she didn't intend to dp it, and although she did offer to replace it, I couldn't take her up on that as it would have easily been her month's rent + grocery money.

What I am trying to say is this: if it is someone close, and an accient, let it be, but if not, well, then I think you should ask for a replacement - but I wouldn't call the cops.

People don't do things "for no reason whatsoever". If someone did that to my computer and told me that they did if for no reason whatsoever then I'd know it was because they were pissed at me for some reason.

intentional = they pay for it in full, immediately.
accidental = don't know, accidents happen, probably try and get insurance to cover it.

Right back where I started...
If they did it intentionally then they should pay for it
If it was an accident they may offer to replace it anyway if they feel bad about it....

It is just a machine and not worth getting violent or messing up relationships over. The machine is replacable.

Did something happen to your MBP, or is it just theoretical?

I'd be pretty upset, but depends on the situation. If something did happen to your 'puter, I hope you can find a way to get it back...insurance, have them pay you, whatever. good luck

accidents happen. And matirial possessions can be replaced.. u buy another one.

If they purposely did it.. yeah i'll be mad. More at the fact that they would destroy something i own to spite me/anger me etc...
