daftly wasted money on various things for my old 2011 imac just before it died, and they are gathering dust in drawers. could sell them on ebay i know....

one of them is a 240gb samsung thunderbolt 1 SSD. i got a thunderbolt 1 to 3 adaptor and it works fine. however i cant seem to install either MacOS on it, or windows. neither the MacOS installer nor bootcamp can see it.

if they did, i assume it would be faster than my windows installation but would it be faster than my MacOS as i guess that will be mainly on the SSD of my superdrive.

is it worth me ripping it open and buying some form of caddy?

or should i just sell it?

also got a thunderbolt 1 to USB3 adaptor but i dont need any more usb and i doubt my mac can cope with so many things plugged in.

I don't have a 2017 iMac, but hopefully this helps somewhat.

As long as it's a relatively fast SSD and you can put files on it, I'd keep it. But if you need to install macOS and it's not working, and you don't want to put files on it, just sell it or take it apart.

IF the enclosure is "open-able", and there is a "core SSD" that can be taken out, I'd take it out and put it into a USB3 enclosure.

IF the enclosure is NOT open-able, I'd sell it or give it away.

Thunderbolt is often a waste of money unless you have a really good reason for needing it.
USB3 (soon to be USB4) will do just as well these days.
