I have MP 2010 with 2x E5620 and now I got one new X5687 for free.

As I got only one I don't know what's the best thing to do.

Sell all 3 of them on ebay and buy something else for the same amount of money or sell E5620 and run X5687 alone in the machine until I buy one more?

I'm sure from reading this forum that the X5687 doesn't work in the Mac Pro.

I'd get rid of it and get 2x X5570 (quad core) CPUs as they're dirt cheap and don't run the fans as high as the W5580 or W5590.

The 6 core variants are still pretty expensive at the moment. Depending on what you do, higher clockspeed might be more valuable than extra cores (4 core CPUs vs. 6 core CPUs). The quads might offer you better bang for buck.

If money is no object and fan noise doesn't bother you then I'd just buy dual 6-core 3.46ghz or 3.33ghz CPUs.

Tnx for reply. Noise does bother me so I think I will stick with quads for now. X5570 sounds fine compared to mine.

And why wouldn't the X5687 run on a Mac Pro? The OP would need two of them, but there's no reason they wouldn't run just fine. That processor is a 4 core 3.6 GHz CPU with the proper LGA1366 socket. The TDP is 130 watts (same as the W5590s I'm running in my Mac Pro).

And the OPs E5620s have value in the resale market.

Correct.

I tried a single X5687 on a single-socket 4,1->5,1 Motherboard

I had no way to test if it works on a Dual socket MP board. Id be interested to know though!

i just bought a pair of x5687 for my mac pro 5,1 mid 2010.
i had x5677 and they worked (pair, not single).
so no reason why x5687 wouldn't work.

i will update you once cpus will arrive, let's say 3-4 weeks

I can't remember where I've read it, probably Netkas, but I'm sure I read about people having problems with this chip. Also, I note that Pindelski in his guide mentions known problems trying the chips ending in 7, i.e. x56X7

I would assume it is likely to be problematic or not boot, despite the shared socket

don't know if x5687 will work or not in your Mac Pro, but there's one thing i am sure (having tried it myself with a x5670): running a single cpu on a 2 socket mobo is definitely not a good idea, because it makes all the fans run full blow and the noise is so loud, makes it unbearable. had to go back to the original x5520 before i could find a second x5670.

if you read some posts above, i wrote that i'm using 2x x5677 with 0 problems.
now i'm waiting for 2x x5687
