Hi I have a pc (yeah i know) p4 3.0 ghz 1gb ram .I want a mac mini but i dont have the money to purchase it .I have to worry about bills and other insignificant stuff like food and medicine.Any i was concidering a clamshell notebook .I just want to have a mac and have a pc as well .Would any one purchase a clamshell just for surfing the net thats about it.Any advice .thanks Guys

I wouldn't get anything. From the sounds of it, you have your money tied up in really important things.

Now, if you saved a bit each month or something, you could splurge for a new Mac. However, just getting a Mac to browse the Internet when you already have a pretty good computer is like buying a really really nice car to park it in the driveway. No one's going to stop you, but I'd wait until your needs change or are redefined.

A "clamshell" iBook G3 would work fine for just surfing on the internet. :)

But as osustudent has suggested, perhaps you should save your money until you can afford a Mac (and a newer one at that). But if you just want to get your feet wet and enter the world of Mac now, then I guess you should just go for it. :)

I can also attest to this. I bought my first mac, a G4 Ibook last summer, thinking I would be satisfied. Now I am back on these forums looking to buy a mini and waiting for an update that cannot be too far away. At the very least, if you can wait, there may be a price drop sometime soon that takes the mini into the realm of affordable for people like you and me. It is currently overpriced for what it has to offer, in my mind.

A Mac Mini would be a great computer for the OP (especially if the updated ones get a price drop), provided that he/she does not need mobility. :)

Thanks for the advice.I think i would probably save for a new mac mini(intel) :)

Good choice, you will love an Intel based Mac Mini nyprospect! :)

Good luck on saving up for it, it is well worth every cent. :)

A good question that I'd have to ask is why.

We have some G4 eMacs in our Uni labs, and I really have to admit one thing, at a tad over 800Mhz those aren't the finest machines to work with even with 768MB of ram. I can't imagine the G3 that you are planning to get having specs better than one of those eMacs.

Heck, even on my comparatively *very fast* Core Duo Mini, invoking the widgets layer from time to time would result in a 5-10 seconds wait while the hard drive threshing like crazy to probably load something from virtual memory! I have 2GB installed in this machine, no less!

For the price of the clamshell you can probably get a P3 laptop, clocked at around 1Ghz, get some ram for it, deck it out, and it'd give you performance roughly equivalent to a P4 1.8Ghz. Not blazing by today's standards, but definitely usable.

In fact since you already got a PC I really don't see the need. Macs are pretty good computers, not good enough that I'd say "good" without a moment hesitation, but they are.. good. Still I really can't see why you'd discount a PC right away when you are having troubles with food and medicine. What medicine do you need anyway? I didn't need to have any for the past 3 years!

Anyway, focus on your priorities, you got bigger issues than trying to look cool with yesterday's Mac, that's for sure.

Didn't realise I have a fan following

Hey, fanboism is not for me. I like Macs, but they aren't perfect too!

Same here- I love using Macs, but I realize that they are not perfect. But IMHO, they are better than anything else out there for my needs/wants. :)

I'll start sending over the canned beets right now!

Anyways, there is no better pleasure than sitting in front of your tv with a laptop surfing wireless. It's simply amazing. I'd get a cheap clamshell with some decent ram for surfing the web while you're watching Parental Control and Next. Hope you have a nice recliner

I think the same thing- there is nothing better than to be able to sit on the couch, watch tv, and surf the web wirelessly (MR of course!). :)
