In the process of building a brand new home theater in the basement and was wondering when i get to putting the AV gear together, should I just use an HDMI cable from the Blu Ray player/ATV 2 to the reciever for the audio or should i also run an optical cable? Going to get the ONKYO HT-S9400THX package.

if your going to be running the ATV and blu-ray player through the receiver via HDMI then there is no point using optical as HDMI already carries all the audio.

you would mainly use the optical for either audio only devices or for devices that run direct to the TV but you want the sound through your speaker system.

If you care anything at all about 7.1 audio from your blu-ray player you will only go with HDMI as optical cannot carry 7.1 audio... only 5.1

Thanks. I will be doing a 7.1 surround setup. HDMI only it is then.

I envy you. I wish I had a basement, or a decent sized spare room, and I'd build a home theater. The full works, projector, curtains, plush carpet, popcorn trodden into the carpet, kids making out in the back row.

Well it won't be the worlds biggest home theater. 12' X 17'. LOL But yes can't wait. Maybe going to wait until the end of the year to get the projector. Want the Epson 8700UB, but if they come out with a decent priced 3D projector, then I'll go that route. Just to cover my bases.
