so i bought 2 3,1 Mac Pro's recently for €25 each, listed as faulty. one works fine, the other one doesn't. that's the one this thread is about.

basically the symptoms are that it boots to macOS about half the time, and when it does it stays on for anywhere between 1 minute to 1 hour, then the screens go black and it revs the fans up to max rpm. macOS doesn't log a crash either.

i've talked with some people on discord and they reckon it's a bad cpu, so i want to order new ones.

the 2 main questions i have is what cpu's are compatible with it, and this is a single cpu model, can i upgrade it to dual cpu just by putting 2 cpu's in or do i need to do other modifications?

i would like to order something faster than the stock 2.8ghz, since if this Mac Pro still isn't happy with the new cpu's i can swap them into the working one and get a speed boost, so i'd prefer to order cpu's that run at 3ghz or faster.

I'd start with re-pasting the CPU of the faulty one.

For doing a single to dual upgrade you will need a 2nd heatsink. I have one lying in the workshop (with a 2nd xeon, don't remember what speed). But I live in Europe.

also an update, the faulty one works totally fine running linux. it just hates macOS for some reason.
