Was this feature erased throughout several recent updates? Of course I could use the mouse to drag/highlight.. but that's not how it used to be.

As far as I can tell, that was never "a thing" when in icon view. It doesn't work in any version I've tested (8.6, 10.3, 10.14, and 14.3). It does, however, work in list view, at least in recent versions.

I think I do recall the ease of keyboard multi select icons.
This isn't a recent discovery, but now that I found the time for this minute thing which substantially irks me every time I use my computer.......... anyone else to confirm/contradict my suspicion?

Apple Support - Select items on your Mac screen
"Select multiple items that are adjacent: Click the first item, then press the Shift key and click the last item. All items in between are included in the selection.
You can also click near the first item, press and hold the trackpad or mouse button, then drag over all of the items. This method’s especially useful in the Icon view in the Finder."

Ok; I guess it no longer works. Thanks for the input. 🥉

As @Nermal mentioned above, it was never possible for icons. Even in High Sierra, that still has the option to “Clean Up Selection”, click first , shift , click last doesn’t work in icon view.
Probably because icons can be manually moved arround

Shift-Click in Icon View does work, for adding one item at a time to the selection. If you want several that are adjacent, you use the click and drag method. Then, if there are others to add that are not adjacent, shift-click still works.

Replace shift-click with command-click to make multiple selections for non-adjacent items.

In the Finder both shift- and command-click work apparently (literally just found that out). I always used command for that. In other apps using shift instead of command for that purpose becomes spotty and you're better off using command-click.

I think you're talking about icon view in the Finder.

If you're in list view, shift-click is going to select everything between the last thing you clicked and the next thing you click. Command-click will always just select individual items with each click. (Re-clicking on an item will toggle the selection.)

As noted, after your post, you're referring to Icon View. The difference between Shift-Click and Command-Click for highlighting multiple items is that the latter will also magnify the file/folder name. And, while both of these do work for non-adjacent items, as has been stated, they also work for adjacent items.

Also still works in Column view.

It gets bigger.
At this point I’m at a loss what you’re referring to. Nothing “gets bigger” or “magnified” on my screen when using command + click. So like zevrix I’m also keen to learn under what circumstances this is supposed to happen exactly.

A highlight color appears to indicate a file or folder is selected, but that always happens when selecting something.

And, while both of these do work for non-adjacent items, as has been stated, they also work for adjacent items.
Goes without saying it also works with adjacent items. Would be really weird if it didn’t.

Interesting that you don't see the magnified name, or perhaps that I do. The file name is enlarged, and it appears in a black outlined white rectangle (with rounded corners).

I agree that it would be weird.

You must have some setting made that causes the name to magnify when you are simply selecting the file or folder. It's not a default action. Could you be using one of the Finder helper apps?

Hmm.…Thank you.

You must have universal access settings enabled. That’s not default behavior.

I’ll have to check that the next time I go up to the computer, or maybe in a couple of days. I’m too lazy to go upstairs tonight, and will be gone all day tomorrow. But, I bet you’re right.

Edit: Yep, "Hover Text" was enabled. I kind of like it!
