There's a guy in my town that's looking to offload a 6-core 2013 Mac Pro with D500 graphics for $1400CDN with keyboard, mouse, and thunderbolt 2 dock. So far that's the cheapest I've seen it go for in my area, but it's still high enough to keep me from biting. Was wondering what you guys think would be the sweet spot for picking up one of these trash cans. It would certainly make a nice replacement for my 2009 Mac Mini iTunes server...

On eBay prices vary widely, so if I were in your position I would first determine how old the unit is by checking the serial number.

Serial Number -- fourth digit date info, by first half and second half of the year:
K or L == 2013
M or N == 2014
P or Q == 2015
R or S == 2016
T or V == 2017
W or X == 2018

If it is a newer unit, perhaps 2016 or later, then I think the $1400CDN is a fairly good price, but that's just my opinion. Personally I would not buy anything older than that in that particular model. It all comes down to what it is worth to you personally, bearing in mind it is not upgradeable and has had it's share of known problems. What value does it offer you?

compare to ebay is best bet.

a 2013 mp is not the 'best value' mac but if you relay want one it's up to you.
if you are only going to use it as a 'iTunes server' a newer mac min is a better value option.

if you want it as more of a collectors item inspect it in person and check it's mint condition as there is more risk with buying on ebay (just from postage never mind misleading adverts) and do add in all the time you will waist looking on ebay for a mint macpro 2013, if time is worth a lot to you it makes it simple if you can just pick it up.

id get a mac min :D, only collectors item i want is a cube G4

Thanks for the serial number info, that’s great to know!

I think it would also depend on how much use the machine had too, eh? For example, where I work, the nMPs that run the recording studio are running 24/7, but the one in our on-line finishing suite hasn’t been used in about a year.

Yeah part of it is the collector’s item. I had to give up my B&W G3 with 20” Apple Cinema Display and still bummed about it. The Cube was neat, and I sold a few when working for an official reseller, but it was a hard sell. Pretty bad value compared to a PowerMac G4.

Tempted by the Mac Mini. I think if the price came down a little more (pretty expensive in Canada), I’d seriously consider it.

In my opinion not a great iTunes server replacement. It's a nice desktop for sure but burns about four times the electricity in idle and is louder (not loud!) next to a Mini.

It would be in an office at the other end of the house.

Hmm, maybe I should rethink this and take another look at the mini...

Personally I prefer it over the rest of Apple's current lineup - but if you're not planning to sit in front of it then IMO it's not worth it.

Unless I replace my 4,1 Mac Pro with it and move the 4,1 home to use as an encoding/server machine...
