Whats it like listening to music on the iphone?

Im going to be getting an iphone between now and christmas I think.

I currently have an Omnia, 8GB... and an ipod classic thats about 3 years old and has an 80GB storage... of which I use 20GB on music and podcasts.

Im torn between getting the 32GB iphone and using it as an all in one device, or getting and 8GB iphone and generally keeping the same set up ive got now.

I listen to music at my desk for about 5 hours everyday at work, so i like it to be as painfree as possible, going from album to album.... etc

I guess the battery will be important, although I can also plug it in at my desk.

What are your thoughts and opinions?
 
Listening to music on the iPhone is very convenient, seeing as though everything is on one device. It's smooth and simple to go from the email app to the iPod app. Browsing my music collection couldn't be easier, just flicking though or using the scroll bar. If I receive a text or email, the music briefly fades as the sound effect plays, the same goes for telephone calls.

I plug my iPhone into my car's radio which is great, seeing as I don't have to be juggling devices as I drive. And finally, having everything all in one makes it one less thing to worry about. All of that is what makes the iPhone so great. And for music, it's no exception. Easy and convenient.
 
It's like this - you press "iPod" icon. The menu comes up. Choose between Artist, Album Title, Song, or other configurable fields. Press song title you wanna listen to. Album art is displayed. Press album art to see a progress bar. Adjust volume on the bottom bar. Song title, album and artist are displayed when you press album art. Tilt iPhone sideways to do CoverFlow, which is a beautiful interface - provided you have all your album art on your songs.

Receive a call during playback? It fades out the music momentarily while you answer your call, and automatically resumes when you disconnect. A text? No interruption - you see the text msg preview while listening to music. When navigating any other screen besides the iPod screen, double click Home button to bring up a convenient control menu for music playback.

I'm not trying to be a smartass either... He asked what it's like, I answered in detail.

Yeah, and the detailed description was good, but I was looking for coments on things like, speed, responsiveness and battery life etc

I have used an Ipod Touch... and I was wondering how the ipod function compares to that I supose?

I'd imagine virtually the same, but are there differences?
 
Also if you use the iphone headphones you get to use the inline remote to change songs etc which is very nice when the iphone is in your pocket. Only downside with using these headphones is that after an hour's use they hurt my ears, kind of rub them.

Its very annoying.

As far as I'm aware they're exactly the same. There's no lag or anything on the iPhone iPod. Music doesn't use up too much battery life on my (OLD) iPhone and I guess with the 3GS it'd be even better. The phone should last the day easily anyway, and I tend to just plug mine in if I'm sitting at a desk with it.

It's the same, other than the potential for a phone call interrupting (though it pauses as was mentioned) your tunes. I don't know how much time you got with the touch, but there are a few nice conveniences with regards to music listening, especially with the latest versions of these devices. For example, the voice control actually works very well. I can hit the button, say "Play songs by david bowie" and it will shuffle me up a playlist of all david bowie music. You can do simpler things like next track or whatnot, or tell it to dial a number or a person, etc. That's really nice when you're used to having your device in your pocket with headphones in.

Another handy feature is, if the phone is locked and you want to move tracks or whatever, but are not using the OEM remote equipped headphones you can double press the home button *WHILE LOCKED* and you'll get music controls with the details of what is playing. Also you can set it up so you can do the same during normal use to get a popup with those controls, so you don't have to leave whatever app you're using.

I've listened to music for 16 hours straight without a notable increase of battery use beyond what I already use in a normal day of no music usage. I swear it's like... if you're not doing anything else, you'll see some battery drop but if you're doing other things it seems that music playback just kind of piggybacks along not affecting battery usage much at all. Even with bluetooth stereo headphones I was able to listen for several hours with only 20% battery usage, which is pretty good.

You probably know the rest if you've used an iPod touch.

I changed those stock ear buds to the Bose ear buds. Now I have the same remote controls to pause,play, skip,volume up and down but with great bass and sound from the Bose in ear head BUDS!

You can actually swap ANY ear buds you want and the job is so well worth it! Try it you won't regret it.
 
It's a better experience on the iPhone than it is on the classic. Whenever I listen to music on my phone I'm usually at work so I have it on airplane mode and it saves a lot of the battery. Since I'm at work people can just call me there/and or email me. Just spend the extra money and get the newer technology.

The iphone's audio quality is terrible.

If music is the big main factor, than look elsewhere.

For an all-in-one device, it's your best bet.
 
Buy a good set of headphones and a dock that stays plugged into the wall. The Apple iPhone dock works just fine but you are going to enjoy yourself more if you don't always have to carry a cable and wallplug with you and set it up each day.
 
I think you'll be happy.

Easy, convenient, good sound quality, and you can use BT wireless stereo headphones.

Could you explain further?

Others have mentioned its pretty much the same as an ipod touch, so do you consider the ipod touch to have terrible SQ?
 
Excellent quality for the normal folks like us, but I think it is bad compared to Sony for audiophiles.

Yeah, the sound quality is pretty poor.

This is comparing the sound quality to audiophile quality players such as Cowon, Sony, etc.

But as mentioned before, for an all in one device, nothing comes close.
