Hi guys, new here and need a little info on a Power Mac Pro. I'm now using a
G4 PC 10.4.11 and now every where I go it says up-grade your browser. I'm there can't go higher unless I go to 10.5. I think maybe a waste of money considering age of machine. I found a Pro 2x3.0GHz, Duel Core CPU intel Xeon,
10GB Ram, 6x DL Super drive, Mac 10.7, ATI Radeon x1900 XT 512 Graphics.
Question is it worth $550.00. or what should I be looking for in this price range. I seen a 2010 for sale for $700. what should I do? Thanks

He is meaning the Mac Pro 4.1 which in Ebay would be the 2009 Mac Pro. The (Early 2008) is the 3.1 Mac pro, and it is maxed out at 3.2GHZ, and not worth getting.

You can flash the firmware on the 4.1 Mac Pro and basically makes it a 5.1 machine, which enables you to upgrade the processors, and ram to better specs.

You really should look at chucking the PowerMac and getting a MacBook or a MiniMac.

The cheapest MiniMac would be far more powerful than your PowerMac.

Seriously, take a couple of steps back and look at the wider picture of what your needs are. If you have a PowerPC - the cheapest MacBook Air or MiniMac will be a huge jump for you.

Apple's moved on. Getting an Intel Mac Pro would just be trading your PowerPC dinosaur for a newer dinosaur. For about the same amount of money you could leap to the current generation.

Definitely go for a 2010 over a 2008, but I would echo Aiden's comments; if you've been getting by with a G4, even an entry-level Mac mini would be a massive boost over what you've had previously, and you don't strike as the kind of guy who's going to be doing a lot of upgrades to his kit.

Buying a refurb or used recent-vintage Intel Mac would be even cheaper, and still a significant boost in the price range you're talking about.

I think we should be able to identify Mac Pro's properly. You mean 3,1 (not 3.1) and 4,1.

From what the OP has said, I'm not sure he's ready for a CPU Transplant.

I'll "fourth" that as well. If you're still using a Power PC, just about any newer Intel based Mac will be a world of an upgrade. What do you use your machine for? If you're just using basic computer software (web browsing, email, music, word processing, etc.) then I don't think you'll quite need a Mac Pro's power. If you're interested in a notebook, MacBook Airs are beautiful and swift, but if you like that desktop form factor, Mac Minis are great as well.

What do you use it for? I'd say just get a new MacMini and be good to go for the next five years.
