Before I buy another iPad, Apple will have improved the display quality, given iOS more power, and given the damn things some structural integrity again. The 2018 iPad Pro is an abortion.
For real? Or are you saying that you’d like to see autocorrect improvements?
Very much enjoying my iPad Pro 11" and do not look forward to replacing it until 2020.
It was not bent out of the box and all four side were perfectly straight!

At this point, I am content with hardware for likely a few years. Any improvements will be software related.
Besides the usual incremental updates, maybe oled or micro led, or some battery-saving display technology.
I don’t think Apple will make it foldable (on purpose) in the foreseeable future.
Like dnichter said, all the major improvements in the near future will likely be in software.

I agree with subjonas and dnitcher.....mainly software and battery life improvements is my guess. While I’d love to see a micro led, I can only imagine the price points!
A glass back on a 11 to 13 inch device? That would be a disaster dude.
My mistake, I don’t think micro led is ready for next generation. Probably at least 3 years out.
Oled, headphone jack, one extra usb-c port on the other side, smart keyboard with integrated trackpad, 8gb of RAM, starts from 128gb
15-inch as I do more and more work on my iPad. I agree with 8 gb of RAM. High speed external drive access for video work would be nice. The "usual" 20-40% CPU/GPU boost of course. The latter maybe difficult without a node shrink.
Probably the most important software feature for me would be to be able to open two instances of the same app, one in each part of the screen. Having slide in windows from left and right to have up to four active apps.
I spend 0.01% of my time on the home screen so how that looks like is completely irrelevant.

I don't think there will be a iPad Pro update until around 2020, Apple tend to wait around 16-18 months before updating the iPad Pro. That being said i'm not sure what they can do with the next generation, the 2018 iPad Pro is a BIG update and redesign that Apple may just give the next version a spec bump and much better software.
The software is my biggest complaint at the moment and the one reason i didn't upgrade from my 2017 iPad Pro, i hope with the IOS 13 the iPad Pro can get a little more productive. I do like the design of the new iPad Pro, it looks sleek and the thinner bezel looks great, Face ID is brilliant on my iPhone X so it's great to see it on the iPad Pro as well. I would love to see Face ID on the Mac, however i think that is years away.

i think hardware wise its in a good place right now.... Definitely need to see a whole OS revamp. I feel that using a mobile OS is really holding the device back. Apple really needs to create something in between iOS and Mac OS for the iPad from the ground up.

Yeah that’s a more viable thing to do. A completely new rethought operating system.
I think the way Apple sees it, iOS is for the everyday person, macOS is for anyone who has more complex needs. iPad hardware complements the quick task/intuitive/simple focus of iOS; Mac hardware complements the long task/robust/versatile focus of macOS. I don’t think Apple is interested in changing the focuses of the OSes, nor swapping their complementing hardware (although they compromised a bit with the Smart Keyboard). iOS, because it is relatively new, has been going through more significant changes than macOS, but I suspect that after maybe one or two more changes, it will level off and start to only gain small features here and there, much like macOS does. But I think core functionality won’t change much from where it is now.
Of course, strong enough demand can change even Apple’s mind, as we have seen with phablets. But as of now, Apple doesn’t seem to be losing enough Mac and iPad sales to the competition for that to happen here.
The iPad Pro is definitely better than it use to be, I hope that in iOS 13 we see things like being able to have two of the same app open, a better file management system, those type of things would be nice. The new iPad Pros are insanely powerful, they rival some Macs and so for them to be Pro devices it would be nice if Apple made Pro Apps like Final Cut Pro for the iPad Pro. I understand that full Photoshop will be coming later this year, that is a great start but in order for me to ditch my Surface Pro 6, Apple really need to pull it out the bag with iOS 13 this year.
Software. The iPad Pro is in a class of it's own, hardware-wise.
The iPad is so far ahead of every other tablet on the market that there is a strong argument that the 10.5" Pro is the 2nd best tablet on the market, and the $300 regular iPad is the 3rd best.

Software, software and software. There's a lot of low hanging fruit as well as more difficult things that could be improved in iOS.
- Predictably working multitasking for any app. Want it in a floating window or split screen? Should be possible with any app and should a required feature for developers to support. Looking at you, Gmail.
- Easier, more predictable ways to start split screen multitasking. I think it should be something to do from the app view rather than this awkward drag and drop from the dock.
- Multiple instances of the same app.
- Better home screen making use of the display real estate.
- Horizontal split screen for portrait view.
- Proper support for software development apps. Running things like NodeJS in a terminal, IDEs, Xcode...
- User level file system where you can choose what kind of folder structures you want and any app can access those. Not this "this is the folder for app X" crap.
- Standard file selection dialog/browser that apps can use.
- Support for on screen pointer by having an Apple Magic Trackpad driver. This was done years ago with jailbreak hacks BTW.
- Ability to set any app to always open as a small floating window. Who the hell needs a full screen calculator for example?
- Ability to set default apps for web browsing, email, music etc.
- Multiple user support so for example I can hand my iPad to my gf and she can just log onto her account and use her favorite software, have her browser history etc.
- Allow zooming in video players. Sometimes the video might be in an awkward aspect ratio or have inset areas so being able to zoom in to see those better would be nice even if it means you won't see some things on edges.
- Connect iPad to Mac or PC, have it show up as a USB disk for easy file transfers to user file system.
- Better audio and video file format support. It should "just work" regardless of what type of file it is.
- Web browser extension support.
- Chromecast remote support like on Android.
- Per website text sizing options when Safari tries to render everything with huge fonts and you can't zoom out.
- Keyboard prediction for more languages. I'd rather not use Swiftkey because it doesn't have the proper keyboard layout on 12.9" iPP.
- Split keyboard, inexplicably removed unless you turn on the zoom feature.
- Better custom keyboard API that could use built-in prediction if they don't want to develop their own. Would allow for improved or just different virtual keyboard layouts without compromising existing functionality.
- Call screen that doesn't block usage.
- Better cursor positioning. I don't know wtf Apple is doing but just tapping words rarely puts the cursor in the right position (usually the end of the word) whereas it works 90% of the time on Android. Hold to move cursor, 3D touch, two finger or hold space on virtual keyboard all all crutches IMO when the most basic cursor positioning doesn't work right.
I’d also like some changes in iOS, but I think you touched on the more important issue: apps. I think the onus is more on app developers to make the iPad more functional—not only by making apps as fully functional as their desktop counterparts, but also by fully implementing things like Apple’s file sharing API, so that we can edit files in place and not mess with moving around files and erasing duplicates. If this worked consistently, we might even just be able to keep using third party apps to access external drives. And actually regarding having two of the same apps open—both Safari and Notability can open two side by side pages/documents, so it’s really just something the developer has a choice to implement. So I think most functionality can be achieved now by developers.
On the other hand, if developers aren’t taking up that responsibility, maybe the onus is on Apple to give developers proper motivation.
