I just bought the new 14" ibook with the 60GB hard drive. I have 25GB free space left, and I only have 5 GB in the applications folder and 17 GB in the music folder. I uninstalled unnecessary foreign languages (-1.6 GB) with that one program. Am I missing something? 60-17-5=38. I understand that hardware vs software gigabytes are different, but really, is OS X close to 13 GB?!

This is very strange. Your math does indicate something is amiss. I would use Disk Utility to run some first aid like 'Repair Permissions, and other things - be sure Volume Journaling is active.

Duff-Man says....swap file (virtual memory) takes up space. the other biggie is all the Garageband loops and audio files that are in /Library/Application Support/Garageband/ ...lastly all the printer drivers installed by default take up a lot of space too - /library/printers/ .....oh yeah!
(and I should add - try using OmniDisksweeper on your drive - it'll tell you where all the space is being used)

Nice program Duff man, your posts crack me up. Ok, I'll never use garageband...can i uninstall it by just dropping the icon from applications to the garbage? I'll never use it. Also, would you guys recommend deleting printer drivers? I have a canon printer and it doesn't look like i'll need the other drivers. I'll run disk utility now and report back. Also, I won't be developing anything so should I uninstall the Xcode installer?
when uninstalling an app yes u can uninstall it by dropping the app in the trashcan...but don't forget about it's library files and other types of files associated with it (do a spotlight search to find these). i would also recommend deleting the other printer drivers except for the ones you need. as for the xcode..yeah...i'm not sure why that would be installed on your computer by default anyways (mine was a install later if you want ordeal).

I have installed a few programs, but they can't add up to be more than 500 MB. I've uninstalled 1.6 GB of languages as I said above. What can be eating all of my space? OS X can't be nearly 10 GB.
My hard drive shows up as 55.77 GB, and I have 23.68 GB free space left. I have 600 MB of photographs and 18 GB of music. I have installed a few programs, but they can't add up to be more than 500 MB. I've uninstalled 1.6 GB of languages as I said above. What can be eating all of my space? OS X can't be nearly 10 GB.
there is already a thread about this... OSX is a very large operating system... try deleting all of the extra language files and applications that you won't use

Did you dump the junk the Garageband leaves behind? /Library/Application Support/ Look for GarageBand
Also, how are you adding this info up? Via the Finder? There are many hidden directories that can easily add up to missing info. Do this, open Terminal.app (from your Utilites folder) and enter this:
sudo du -h -d 1 /
Hit Return, let it run. This will tell you the size of every directory at the root of your hard drive. Investigate further based upon that. But since you're a self-declared newbie, please don't delete anything without asking first.
EDIT: Also, please post the results from the above command as this will help up identify where your "missing" space has gone.

4.1GB of stuff in Applications. (more then you though, eh?)
4.3GB of stuff in the root Library (probably the GarageBand junk and iDVD junk, as well as printer descriptions)
19GB of stuff in /Users, probably your user.
Those 3 account for pretty much everything you're seeing that's "missing".
Sorry if this is thread-jacking but typicly how much space do you get on a new computer with OS X 10.4 and iLife + everything else?
