I have been waiting for the new mac pro since the imacs were released. I'm running a hackintosh right now. Software wise its rock solid but the constant fan noise, hum, rattles coming out of this thing is driving me nuts well I wait. Everyday its a new noise. I know either one will be quieter then this creaky self built computer but which one is more quiet? I'm looking forward to a whisper quiet studio.

Both are pretty quiet in my experience with the recent ones, including under high loads. If you require additional hard drives, it swings in favor of the mac pro. External drive enclosures are so damn noisy, although a well designed one can keep the drives cooler.

By the way, the mac pro hasn't been updated in a while, and the most popular model (the six core) is quite expensive for what you're really getting.

+1 With the previous poster.
Both machines are pretty silent. The Mac Pro may suck more dust in through the larger grill/vents but that is easy enough to remove.
Externals are loud so if you go for the iMac route opt for the BTO 2tb.

Idle and under little load the iMac is quieter (it's hard to even notice it's actually switched on). The MacPro is more audible (though not loud by any means), but stays quiet even under heavy/continuous load, where the iMac has to crank up its fans to get rid of the heat (sounding pretty annoying due to the tiny fans and small housing openings on the iMac, which together require comparably high fan RPM).
