Seriously, why would anyone want to buy a MBA over a MB or MBP? If you have the money to spend on a Mac, why not get the one with a disc drive and stuff? I don't get it.....

It's light, and many people don't need all that fancy stuff (two USB ports, FW800, Ethernet, ODD, ...) for a mobile computer.
One of our writers uses an MBA just for writing scripts, and he is more than okay with it, as it fulfils its job on top of being not heavy.

I have a MBP and I desire a MBA simply for the size and weight of it. I use the MBP for all my heavy work such as Garageband but I want the MBA for traveling around daily doing light work on Pages, the Internet and Mail.
I don't like dragging around the MBP everywhere; I want something smaller and lighter and I don't need all the power of the MBP or the disc drive. I vaguely remember the last time I used the disc drive on it or even on my iMac.

The MacBook Air is an ultra portable in a computer form.
Yes the Mabook Pro is portable but not as thin and sleek as the MacBook Air.
It has it's uses at being very portable. People buy the iPad to travel with but some people also want a thin device but with an actual OS X and a physical keyboard to type and work on the go.
The iPad has it's uses but for heavy work thats where the ultra portable MacBook Air comes in.
It's more for those business people who travel a lot and want a lighter laptop.
The MacBook Air has it's own market place in the world of laptops. You shouldn't compare it to the MacBook Pros.
It's spec was once on the MaBooks many years back. And from what I remember the OS runs quite fine.

I'd like the new MBA to be an iPad with keyboard. IMO that would make it perfect.

I wanted one once for on-the-road use. But then I realized it's only 1.5 pounds lighter and not much smaller than my MacBook Pro and missing a whole lot of things. So I bought a netbook instead, which was still missing a few things but a heck of a lot cheaper. If Apple does a new Air for a reasonable price, maybe I'll think again.
From the sounds of it. An iPad would be great for you. Also missing a few things and it's an iOS device. it's great to take with you everywhere
Have a Laptop and an Ipad. Instead of a netbook.

Netbooks don't run well.
the best combo for a person who uses computers a lot is a MBP and iPad. Just saying.
An even better combo is an iMac and an iPad. Again just saying.
That is the reason why I got myself a MBA. Too big to lug around, but I love the power of it. Never needed an optical drive, and only needed the USB port when it came to plugging in an external harddrive. Although I should mention that a bluetooth mouse was imperative to get to save my usb port. That sucked.
I had an ipad as well. I would say I a little more work done on the mba than the ipad because I can just type of documents without having to reformat it.

But it all depends on what you do with the devices so that where it contradicts what I said.

This would be a horribel deal considering how outdated the current MBA is. Your MBP is a better machine than it.
Also, new Airs are being announced on Wednsday and will likely be around $999, with a hundred dollars off with student discount.
At least wait until Wednsday to make your decision.
I very nearly bought one. Why? My requirements were fairly basic, i only use CD/DVD for installing the OS (and have a USB drive i could use for that), i don't do anything that needs a lot of power, and so i might as well get the smaller lighter one rather than the bigger heavier one. There's no advantage to me having the MPB over MBA.
Why didn't I get one? I wanted 4GB RAM and a bigger hard drive - and, as the MBPs has just been updated when i was looking earlier is year, assumed the MBA would follow shortly after. It didn't, and i got bored waiting, so now have the better (for me) combo of iMac and iPad - huge screen for photo editing etc, ultra-portable and huge battery life for internet and general on-the-go usage.

I plan on getting one to have a thin, light laptop to take with me when I travel or to a friends house and such.
When I travel I take either my snowboarding gear, or my camera gear with me. Most of the time I prefer to take my iPad only but if I am working on a project or I am traveling while I have class also then I have to take a regular computer that I can program on, do some 3D modeling (no renders, just modeling) and work in Unity.
The macbook air fits that bill perfectly! I want something thin and light (much thinner then the macbook pro).
