I was just in the softbank store taking a look at the iphone 4 (which is sold out) and the phone was running an advertisement.

On the advertisement, it had an app that found the name of a song for you say for example if you were in the department store and heard it over the p.a

what is it called ?

Thanks

I've used "MusicID with lyrics" from the app store in the past and it worked well.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 3_1_3 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/528.18 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile/7E18 Safari/528.16)

I use an app called Shazam.

There's two big apps that I know of that do this, Shazam and SoundHound.

I've had both and would recommend SoundHound. It has faster song recognition and it can also recognize a song even if you sing it.
It's also a universal app, meaning it's interface is designed for iphone as well as ipad.

Regardless, you can't go wrong with either.

I use shazam - needs about a 20 second sample or so, so far has identified anything I've heard in the wild (giving it a pass on the anime and mixes I've found :p) - never seen it not identify something I've heard over the radio or store speaker UNLESS too much ambient noise.

Also free.

The app that was advertised was probably Shazaam, and I've used both Shazaam and SoundHound and would recommend SoundHound out of the two of them. I've had far better luck with SoundHound of being able to launch the app and have it catch the very tail end of a song and still ID it.

Thanks for all the replies ! Ive been searching for such an app for years but when i went into the store, I didnt catch the name....:)
