So I just picked up a 2021 Mini today, but I'll be damned if I can find any cases on Amazon for it, everything is Mini 5 or earlier...isn't this the "6"? I guess previous cases will work but it's weird there's NOTHING about this "new" model...

Thx

Whoops you thought Apple released a new iPad mini and went out and bought one?

The current Mini is the Mini 5. And physically it isn’t any different than the Mini 4 so there should be plenty of cases available.
The rear camera is in a slightly different location so the camera opening in Mini 4 cases isn’t quite right. Photos don’t show any oddities when using a thinner case like the Apple silicone back cover. However, with a thicker back cover like those on heavier two or three piece covers, there is some shadowing on the upper left. It’s not especially noticeable, but perfectionists won’t like it.

Did someone stop you at a gas station and pop their trunk and let you pick what 2021 iPad mini you wanted?

Just FYI for those buying accessories for the iPad Mini 5. Although the body is identical to the Mini 4, there is an ever so slight difference in the placement of the volume buttons and a different placement of the rear-facing microphone.

That won't cause any issues with something like a smartcover, but for full cases there might need to be some modifications.

I bought a Zagg keyboard case (designed for the Mini 4) for use with my Mini 5. The cutouts for the volume buttons were wide enough to handle the differences, but I had to use a dremel tool to drill a hole in the back for the microphone.

Two accessories I highly recommend getting for the Mini 5 are Apple's smartcover (I was able to pick up a Product (RED) smartcover for $5 new) and the Zagg keyboard case (can easily be found new for $20 or less).

The smartcover keeps the Mini 5 lean-and-mean as a tablet / ereader. (I also use the Apple Pencil with it so I use one of those stick-on Pencil sleeves on a 2nd smartcover). The Zagg keyboard turns the Mini 5 into a super-portable netbook.

A case for mini 4 is also going to cover one microphone on mini 5.

Good catch. I don’t think I’ve ever used the microphone(s) on mine in the whole time I’ve had it, which has been since release day, so I’d forgotten about that. Now that you mention it, I vaguely remember the microphone difference.

I want a 2021 iPad mini that is full screen like the Pro but in a mini size. I would buy that in a heartbeat!

I probably would too, even though I love my Air. If a Mini had been released alongside the 2020 Air, I would’ve picked up the Mini. It’s just an awesome little device, especially when it has up-to-date specs.
