Well for instant messaging, go for ebuddy, as you can just use your msn/yahoo/Facebook/aim login

Pingchat has support for android,blackberry, and iPhone. Full cross platform support. Whats app is still working on that. All they have left to make is the android version.

But those rely on other people downloading those apps too on their devices, ebuddy uses existing IM logins, which already have your friends on them....

Have to look at PINGCHAT app.. been using TEXTFREE app of late for SMS texts... like it it because of of having a "real" phone number that shows up.

i still maintain that ebuddy is better for IM as its free and you don't have to faff about making a new login and you have all your friends on it already.

I use TextFree, it gives you a different phone number just for text (don't think calls would work, at least I haven't tried yet!) and for me it sends messages real quick

This. TEXTFREE works perfect because it gives me a phone number with a semi-local area code.

If someone calls your TEXTFREE number, I'm pretty sure the app let's you know you've received a missed call.

whatsapp hands down.

And IMO one of the best designed iPhone apps all around. Feels very solid and the UI is super streamlined. oh, and it works.
