All right sorry for my ignorance about this but I am really very green about what happenning in the iPhone hacking world these days.

I had a White 3G iphone which was activated and runningon ATT. I didnt like it so I got the black 8gb and sent the white one to my sister in India.

It has the 2.2 version of the software on it and the phones activated.

Whats the best way to get it to work with one of her local carriers? (Airtel I think)

I dont think she will be doing a lot of custom installs and hacks. I just want it to work with the basic OS that comes natively with the phone. Ability to use itunes and the app store would be a major bonus but I have no idea if thats possible.

Any help suggestions are greatly appreciated. :)

you clearly have missed out the chance to use the first software unlock coming for the iPhone 3G on Dec 31st since you updated your iPhone to 2.2 Firmware. This is b/c Apple has updated the baseband and there is no workaround for it as of now. You could keep your iPhone in a safe place now and decide to wait for the updated unlock or use one of the 'Turbo SIM' out there.
Google it!

shoot I thought so. Am just gonna ask her to check locally. they may have turbo sim there or some way of making it work by chipping the card or something. just want to avoid the whole jailbreak mess as far a possible.

Thanks a lot for the response.
