whats the deal with intel mini chipsets?

Probably. But then, Macs have never really been designed for easy processor upgrades. Companies offer them but they're not that popular.

It's not that bad though. Lets say you want to upgrade in a year or so when the new new chips come out. You could easily sell your existing mini for a few hundred dollars and buy a brand new mini with the new chipset. The couple hundred that you'd spend on the difference would easily be comparable to the cost of a new processor by itself.

The Yonah and FIRST-GENERATION Merom processors (the Napa platform), which it appears will have a short production life. The second generation Meroms (the Santa Rosa platform), due out in the first half of 2007, will have a different socket.

As mentioned, when the new Meroms come out next year, the Meroms being introduced this summer will go out of production shortly afterwards, and the price on them should drop. Good time to upgrade. Or you could sell your existing Mini and get one with the new processor, not to mention probably the faster Crestline integrated video.

Is there a problem with that? Not many sockets are compatible with too many different generations of processors to begin with, and that's pretty neat that you could theoretically swap the yonah for a merom in the mini.
